EARLYBIRD OFFICE
IN BERLIN
With a subtle colour concept and mirrored walls,
Gonzalez Haase AAS staged the office floor of a listed
Wilhelminian-style building in Berlin-Mitte. Bathed in a
monochrome shade of grey, the offices of Earlybird – a
company that invests financially, strategically and with
its network in European technology start-ups – surprise
with an elegant and innovative change of perspective.
G onzalez Haase AAS is well known for telling a story that exudes
a playful, colourful and delicately balanced narrative. This is
also the case here where the monochrome of the grey rooms is quite
something: from the historic stucco ceilings to the walls, doors and
original parquet floors all the way to the window sills and radiators,
virtually all the surfaces have been painted the verysame shade of grey,
with the exception of the Prussian vaulted ceilings, and the interior fur-
nishings – chairs, carpets, tables and curtains – were also designed in
the same shade. Gonzalez Haase made effective use of pink and grey
mirrored walls in this spatial context, dividing the corridor into two

tion- and waiting area and large meeting rooms is given warm accents
and was designed with pink-tinted mirrors, curtains and light objects,
pink lines on custom-made furniture through to the historic double-leaf
doors left natural in this area. Opposite are the quieter, more private
offices, which are completely immersed in grey. The view through the
entire depth of the long office corridors with a new level of mirrored
sequences, which already introduces the following, also mirrored cor-
ridor, is a play with spatial illusion and reality and – certainly in the
spirit of its clients – constantly opens up new perspectives and exciting,
communicative expanses through the entire office, always depending
on the viewing angle. However, the labyrinth of coloured views not only
offers unusual, playful visual experiences, since the mirrored walls have
another important function: they reflect daylight into the darkest areas
of the Wilhelminian-period storey – namely, the central corridors. Anyo-
ne familiar with Gonzales Haase will know that all of the firm’s projects
share a graphically superordinate, well thought-out and always effective
lighting concept. The suspended, indirect lighting in this building pro-
ject, which runs through the entire floor as a continuous network, is
definitely an analogy to Earlybird’s network: a continuous aluminium
light strip has been installed in the form of a network plan across the
