                                                                             Streifen rechts und links des ehemaligen Kohlenschachtes verlaufen, leiten Tages-
                                                                             licht in jede Ecke des tiefen Grundrisses. Weitere gemeinschaftlich genutzte Flä-
                                                                             chen sind ein Restaurant mit Bar im Eingangsbereich und die am Ende der Er-
                                                                             schließung gelegene Freitreppe, die zu kurzweiligen Gesprächen einlädt und in
                                                                             den großzügigen Konferenzbereich führt. Regelmäßig werden die Stufen und der
                                                                             Bereich davor zum Auditorium. Die übrige Fläche wird über alle sieben Ebenen
                                                                             hinweg von Büros unterschiedlicher Größe eingenommen. Durch die gleichberech-
                                                                             tigte Anordnung aller Mieteinheiten entlang der Mittelachse soll vermieden wer-
                                                                             den, dass sich einer der Nutzer benachteiligt fühlt. Festverglasungen sorgen dabei
                                                                             für ein akustisch ungestörtes Arbeiten bei zugleich visueller Verbindung zum bun-
                                                                             ten Treiben auf der Gemeinschaftsfläche.

                                                                             E  indhoven is characterized by industrial buildings constructed by the Philips
                                                                                company after 1916 for the production of light bulbs, household- and medical
                                                                             appliances. After the relocation of the headquarters to Amsterdam in 1997, compa-
                                                                             nies from the creative sector started to move into the former factory grounds. Since
                                                                             2012, attractive converted existing buildings and new residential buildings have
                                                                             also been developed for a predominantly young clientele. Cafés, restaurants, sto-
                                                                             res, sports facilities, cinemas, galleries and museums complement the new and

                                                                             new premises for his steadily growing VanBerlo innovation agency, the designer Ad
                                                                             van Berlo discovered the striking building. He fought for the dilapidating building
                                                                             and spent two years convincing the authorities until permission was granted. Ad
                                                                             van Berlo found an investor and the extensive renovation began. Together with the
                                                                             local Eugelink Architecturr office and De Bever Architecten, Janne van Berlo, an ar-
                                                                             chitect from Rotterdam and the daughter of the committed initiator was put in
                                                                             charge of the radical conversion into a modern multi-tenant office building.
                                                                             From a massive industrial complex to an airy office world


                                                                             It took another two years to completely remove the asbestos. Then followed an
                                                                             analysis of the so-far non-insulated clinker and concrete façade and insulation was
                                                                             unobtrusively added. A visually true to the original but technically updated repla-
                                                                             cement of the glazing and discrete solar collectors on the roof followed so that,
                                                                             today, the building achieves the energy-efficiency class A+. The towering central
                                                                             section with a height of 28 metres and just five metres wide had never been com-
                                                                             pleted. Decades later, the architects finished the original planning with an open
                                                                             steel construction and thus produced the symmetry desired from the start. In ad-
                                                                             dition to a vertical garden, this element now contains an emergency staircase, gla-
                                                                             zed meeting rooms and a likewise glazed elevator. At the very top, the luminous
                                                                             Innovation Powerhouse lettering indicates the new use already from a distance.

                                                                             The interiors consisting of raw concrete, visual double T-beams and high-ceilinged
                                                                             rooms are characterized by the flair of the industrial past. Since recently, inside
                                                                             this structure the creative tenants find generous areas for contemporary and com-
                                                                             municative working. On the ground floor as well as on the two levels above it, a
                                                                             central access axis extends over the whole length where the 14 renting parties au-
                                                                             tomatically meet every day. The simple routing, colourful furnishing and wooden
                                                                             cubes structuring the layout promote the exchange among the tenants and, at the
                                                                             same time, turn the building into a pulsating working world. Ceiling openings on
                                                                             the two upper floors here once more produce the feeling of spaciousness and
                                                                             make visual perspectives across the levels possible. Newly installed skylights in-
                                                                             stalled as strips on the right and the left of the former coal shafts direct daylight
                                                                             into every corner of the deep floor plan. Additional commonly used areas are a re-
                                                                             staurant with a bar in the entrance zone and the flight of stairs at the end of the ac-
                                                                             cess axes which invites to diverting talks and leads into the spacious conference
                                                                             section. The steps and the area in front of it regularly become an auditorium. On
                                                                             all seven floors, the remaining area is occupied by offices of various sizes. With the
                                                                             equal arrangement of all the rental units along the central axis, it was to be avoi-
                                                                             ded that one of the tenants feels disadvantaged. Fixed glazing ensures working
                                                                             without acoustic disturbance and, at the same time, becomes a visual connection
                                                                             to the lively hustle and bustle on the common area.
