F or family-run companies, the generation change usually pre-
1 sents a great personal and organisational challenge. While the
old generation has to hand over the reins, the generation taking over
has to prove its skills on its own. In Chiayi, a city in the South of Tai-
Geländeplan • Site plan wan, this change seems to have been successfully accomplished. At
least that's what the completely renovated office and factory buil-
dings of Forest Spring Enterprise, a manufacturer of water filters for
technical equipment, such as fully automatic coffee machines, sug-
gests. The interior designers and architects from Waterfrom Design

have restructured the 30-year-old company premises and have given
the L-shaped office wing adjacent to the production hall a fresh,

contemporary appearance. In front of the forecourt, the previously
closed façade was replaced by translucent panels that allow glare-

free daylight to enter the building. In keeping with the industrial sur-
roundings, the designers left the supporting structure of the two-sto-
rey hall as well as the ventilation and installation pipes visible. A
gallery level now zones the room’s vertical expanse and provides se-
parated offices, which are enclosed by glass walls. The choice of the
newly introduced materials and their multi-layered use are all cha-
racterised by the theme of water and its path through the complex

med at a concrete counter that shows traces of water. The glass rear
wall was treated by hand with carbon and reproduces wave-like
movements. Behind it, the various functions of meeting, showroom,

workplaces, and lounge are lined up in a flowing sequence of
rooms. Filigree walls, which are alternatively designed as a grid
structure or made of printed glass, zone the floor plan and simulta-
neously provide visual references in all directions. The working en-
11 9 vironment, which is finished in elegant shades of grey, is loosened
up by colour highlights: cheerful canary yellow used to paint the rai-
ling of the gallery and bright red selected for the workplace luminai-
