G retchen Krebs und Ian Read sind Medium Plenty – ein junges Innen-/Archi -
tekturbüro, das seit 2010 unkonventionelle, luftige Wohn-, Laden bau-, Gastro -
nomie- und Officeprojekte in ihrer Heimatstadt Oakland und Umgebung umsetzt. Für
Enlisted, eine Produkt- und Branding-Design-Firma, galt es aktuell, deren Studio-
Räume umzugestalten. Die dafür vorgesehene Industriebau-Etage liegt in unmittelba-
rer Nach bar schaft zu den Büroräumen von Medium Plenty, was die Zusammenarbeit
mit Enlisted-Gründer und Chefdesigner Beau Oyler sehr erleichterte. Die klare und
helle Moder nität des Produktdesigns von Enlisted wollte dieser mit der rohen
Atmosphäre eines Workshop-Raums in Einklang gebracht wissen. Das freigelegte
Beton skelett des alten merkantilen Gebäu des bildet mit seiner groben Textur einen
mehrschichtigen Rhythmus vor den weißen, glatten Wandflächen, die den lichtdurch-
fluteten Raum teilen. Neu eingestellte Raumtrennele men te und leichtes Mobiliar wur-
den sorgfältig choreografiert, um die monolithische Wirkung der neuen Struktur zu
betonen. Die subtile, heterogene Kulisse setzt die zarte und farbenfrohe String-Art-
Instal lation der lokalen Künstlerin Annie Tull in Szene, die die Verkehrs- und Gemein -
schaftsflächen überspannt und die verschiedenen Arbeitsbereiche als physische
Meta pher für den kollaborativen Designprozess miteinander verbindet.

G retchen Krebs and Ian Read are Medium Plenty – a young architecture and inte-
rior design office which has been implementing unconventional, airy residen-
tial, store, restaurant and office projects in their home city of Oakland and its sur-
roundings since 2010. For Enlisted, a product- and branding-design firm, the current
task was to convert their studio spaces. The floor of an industrial building envi-
sioned for this is located in the immediate vicinity of the Medium Plenty premises
which made collaboration with the Enlisted founder and lead designer Beau Oyler
much easier. He wanted to have the clear and bright modernity of the Enlisted-pro -
duct design brought in line with the rough atmosphere of a workshop setting. The
concrete skeleton of the old mercantile building with its coarse texture sets a multi-
layered rhythm in front of the white, smooth wall surfaces dividing the light-flooded
space. New elements and light-weight furniture was carefully choreographed to
emphasize the monolithic effect of the new structure. The subtle, heterogeneous
backdrop brings out the delicate and colourful string art installation by the local
artist Annie Tull and links the various work zones as a physical metaphor of the col-
laborative design process.
