CASA GIALLA
IN MADRID
A small oasis of calm and of the contemplative life: On
just 30 square metres, a refuge has been designed in
Madrid in Spain for being able to evade the hectic
everyday life of the metropolis. The young team of
Gonzalo Pardo from gon architects has breathed new
life into the outdated city flat. The sense of the beauti-
ful things in life characterized the design.
S pain or Italy: that is the question here! This is because, with the
help of gon architects, a touch of native Italian flair was added to
please the new resident of the small city flat located in the vicinity of
the touristic Puerta del Sol in Madrid in Spain. In line with the favou-
rite expression among the Italians “il dolce far niente”, which means
as much as “the sweet doing nothing”, the architects gave the small
flat far more sunny lightness. A strong contrast indeed to the existing
fabric they had initially been confronted with: laminate, oppressive
wooden ceilings, a confining subdivision as well as worn furnishing
indeed needed a lot of imagination to introduce more leisure. All this
did not deter the new resident, however: she recognized the potential
Grundriss • Floor plan underneath the shabby façade and, in close cooperation with the ar-
chitects, the Casa Gialla originated – the yellow home. Existing parti-
tion walls were removed in favour of a distinctive shelf system that
was positioned at the long edge of the room and, immersed in bright
yellow, turns into the central element as to design as well as function.
A sleeping bunk and a small bathroom with a shower that is separa-
ted from the toilet and the washstand are concealed behind a multi-
functional wall on a minimal surface. With many clever details, Casa
Gialla becomes a lively space miracle. A foldable guest bed hides be-
hind a white cabinet front; a temporarily storable counter expands the
work area in the kitchen and a window in the yellow wall supplies
the bedroom located inside the flat with a bit of daylight. The loose
furnishing is lightweight and mobile: with only a few steps, the flat
can quickly be adapted to the individual needs. The highlight, howe-
ver, is the surprising roof terrace: as an extension of the living space,
a small oasis opens up outside. Hidden underneath a comfortable
lounger is a small pool, even a shower has found its place on the few
square metres. gon architects prove that few square metres do not au-
tomatically have to mean foregoing a lot and pure functionality. Quite
the contrary: Casa Gialla offers everything for the “sweet doing not-
Axonometrie • Axonometry hing” – definitely a place on the sunny side of life!
