IN ENNEBERG
Sometimes the challenge of building in rural areas is
to be respectful of the surrounding landscape. In Enne-
berg, a Ladin-speaking community in South Tyrol, this
has been achieved. Architect Daniel Ellecosta created
a commercial building with a service flat that partly
disappears into the hillside and takes up the existing
building structure.
I t all began when the client's grandfather started processing wool

the business. The parent company in St. Vigil, the main town of the
South Tyrolean municipality of Enneberg, has been expanded to in-
clude a shop in Olang. The two towns are connected by the Furkel
Pass, which winds its way through the alpine world between the
mountains Kronplatz and Piz da Peres. Another production facility of
the artisan weaving company has now been built on this road — albeit
without a salesroom but integrated into the family home. Based on
the traditional hamlet architecture of the surrounding area, architect
Daniel Ellecosta has rethought the architecture of his home region. He
took advantage of the steep south-facing slope and buried the com-
mercial building section consisting of the delivery zone and storage
rooms and also the slope-side part of the ground floor in the moun-
tain. In this way, the architect was able to keep the scale of the buil-
ding within bounds. The result is an elongated building with a solid
base and a projecting gable roof in dark wood, the ridge of which runs

ture. Interspaces partly closed with wooden slats form protected out-
door areas on the surrounding terraces on the ground and first floor.
Local, handcrafted materials such as light spruce wood and rough pla-
ster with regional aggregates pay respect and simultaneously lend the
new building a timeless character. The ground floor accommodates a
workroom with an office, which precedes the service flat. Secondary
rooms and the access are laid out along the slope, while floor-to-cei-
ling glazing on the opposite side shows off the panorama of the sur-
rounding Dolomites to its full advantage. On the ground floor, the kit-
chen and living room are zoned by an inserted box that opens onto
the living room. A historic panelled parlour with a tiled stove adds a
sense of nostalgia. On the upper floor are the parents' bedroom and
those of the two children. The crowning glory is the attic, which pro-
