BUCHLADEN SIEBTER HIMMEL
IN KÖLN
Entwurf • Design DIIIP, Köln
von • by Theresa Hütte
A ll book lovers in Cologne must have been in seventh heaven when the Bastei Lübbe
publishing house decided to open a second branch of “Siebter Himmel” (Seventh
Heaven) in the Belgian Quarter. The popular concept store, known for its carefully curated
selection of books, decorations, fashion, and cosmetics, is being expanded with a second
branch right next door. For the new retail space, Cologne-based architectural firm DIIIP
devised a distinct look that sets it apart from the first branch. Vibrant colours and sophi-
sticated presentation options blend the collection of design books and stationery into an
aesthetic collage. The tight budget, the challenge of bringing light into the dark basement
and the limited space presented the team with tricky tasks, which they solved with great
imagination. Always mindful of the budget, glazed maritime pine panels form the basis
for all built-in elements. Immersed in sunny yellow and heavenly blue, they make the
space, which is located below street level, literally shine. Mirrors visually expand the
small room. Yellow transport boxes and an individually developed shelving system made
of folded sheet metal and standardised tubular connectors blend in. Various inserts allow
different forms of presentation. Thus, the system meets the desire for flexibility and the
diverse range of products. A small piece of heaven in the heart of Cologne!
