N atalija Nikitina, in Mailand lebendes Ex-Model aus Lettland, hat während des
Corona-Lockdowns – wie so viele – ihre Leidenschaft fürs Backen entdeckt. Und: Sie
hat daraus ein Business gemacht. „Signor Lievito“ – „Herr Hefe“ – heißt ihr Brotladen in
der Via Maestri Campionesi. Entworfen wurde dieser von Hannes Peer. Der Architekt und
Designer hatte zuvor nicht nur die Shops des Fashion Labels N° 21 realisiert, dessen Ge-
schäftsführer Natalijas Ehemann ist, sondern er hatte auch das Apartment des Paares
konzipiert. Von Anfang stand fest, dass natürliche Materialien – analog zum Sauerteig –
den Brotladen samt Coffee-Shop prägen sollten. Unglasierte Terrakottafliesen für Boden,
Wände, Fassade und Tresen prägen den Laden – roh, erdig, ehrlich. Inspiriert zu dieser
Materialität hatte die frisch gebackene Bäckerin der Kamin im eigenen Heim. Einen Kon-
trast dazu setzt bei Signor Lievito helles Birkenholz. Wände und Decke sind (Mehl-)weiß
verputzt. Zum Cappuccino-Trinken nehmen KundInnen auf roten gepolsterten Sitzbänken
und losen Stühlen aus Holz Platz. Beide wurden eigens für die Bäckerei gefertigt. Ver-
schiedene Leuchten und ein großes Wandbild, welches an die Strichzeichnungen Pablo
Picassos erinnert, schaffen ein gemütliches Wohnzimmer-Flair. Einladend wirkt auch die
draußen in die Fassade integrierte Sitzbank unter der Markise. Bei schönem Wetter las-
sen sich die Fenster ziehharmonikaartig und weit zur Straße öffnen.

N atalija Nikitina, an ex-model from Latvia who lives in Milan, discovered her pas-
sion for baking – like so many others – during the Corona lockdown. And: she has
turned it into a business. “Signor Lievito” – “Mr. Yeast” – is the name of her bread shop
on Via Maestri Campionesi. It was designed by Hannes Peer. The architect and designer
had previously implemented the stores of the fashion label N° 21, of which Nataliya’s
husband is the managing director, and he had designed the couple’s apartment. It was
clear from the start that natural materials – analogous to sourdough – should characte-
rise the bread and coffee shop. Unglazed terracotta tiles for the floor, walls, façade and
counter characterise the shop: raw, earthy, honest. The newly minted baker was inspi-
red by the fireplace in her own home. Signor Lievito contrasts this with light birch wood.
Walls and ceiling are plastered in (flour) white. When drinking a cappuccino, customers
take a seat on red upholstered benches and loosely arranged wooden chairs. Both were
made especially for the bakery. Various lamps and a large mural reminiscent of Pablo
Picasso’s line drawings create a cosy living room ambience. The bench under the aw-
ning, which is integrated into the façade outside, also has an inviting effect. When the
weather is nice, the windows can be opened up concertina-like towards the street.
