                                                                                     Located right in the “Ruhrpott”, Essen looks back on a
                                                                                     long  history  of  mining.  One  of  the  many  mines  was
                                                                                     Zeche  Kronprinz  where  coal  was  produced  between
                                                                                     1903 and 1961. Right where formerly the Kronprinz pit of
                                                                                     the same name had been transporting material and mi-
                                                                                     ners, the Edeka Markt Hundrieser designed by Kinzel Ar-
                                                                                     chitecture has been standing since August of last year.



                                                                                     S  ince the demolition of the industrial plants, the 37-hectare site has
                                                                                        been a residential and commercial area whose history as a mine
                                                                                     reflect in the new supermarket. For references to the history of the lo-
                                                                                     cation, the planners looked for ways to provide the market with indu-
                                                                                     strial  charm. The  materials  and  construction  methods  of  historic
                                                                                     mines – in the past used purely for this purpose – are therefore also
                                                                                     found in the new building. For ensuring good orientation, these were
                                                                                     effectively applied in the large market building measuring approxima-
                                                                                     tely 2,500 square metres according to departments and well visible at
                                                                                     a distance as well: In the foyer, the customer is thus welcomed in a
                                                                                     spacious hall that – with suspended grids framed in black metal pro-
                                                                                     files – separates the main access area from the actual supermarket
                                                                                     and all the other retail spaces such as the integrated bakery and the
                                                                                     beautigul  flower  shop.  Some  of  the  grids  have  furthermore  been
                                                                                     equipped with deep-green plants which produce an appealing setting
                                                                                     for the fruit- and vegetable department of the supermarket. In con-
                                                                                     trast, surfaces with copper sheets and eye-catching, white graphics in-
                                                                                     dicate the deep-freeze section and thereby give the product segment
                                                                                     a warm and, at the same time, high-quality appearance; the beverage-
                                                                                     and spirits range has its place in a brick, rather stark setting. Freestan-
                                                                                     ding refrigerated counters stand out from this zone as thematic is-
                                                                                     lands and are strikingly elegant with high-gloss tiles and white surfa-
                                                                                     ces. The deli counter which is positioned in the back of the market
                                                                                     area is the heart of the supermarket. Inspired by industrial blast fur-
                                                                                     naces and old industrial shafts, the goods displayed are topped with
                                                                                     impressively illuminated form elements and the panes to the food-
                                                                                     preparation rooms are orange. This has nothing in common with the
                                                                                     kind of rough industrial charm currently seen in many other places.
                                                                                     Rather, the impression is created of high-end design giving the custo-
                                                                                     mer the good feeling of trend-conscious urbanity, tidiness and also hy-
                                                                                     giene. For a food retailer, this kind of interpreting “industrial charm”
