SUPERMARKET
IN ESSEN
Located right in the “Ruhrpott”, Essen looks back on a
long history of mining. One of the many mines was
Zeche Kronprinz where coal was produced between
1903 and 1961. Right where formerly the Kronprinz pit of
the same name had been transporting material and mi-
ners, the Edeka Markt Hundrieser designed by Kinzel Ar-
chitecture has been standing since August of last year.
S ince the demolition of the industrial plants, the 37-hectare site has
been a residential and commercial area whose history as a mine
reflect in the new supermarket. For references to the history of the lo-
cation, the planners looked for ways to provide the market with indu-
strial charm. The materials and construction methods of historic
mines – in the past used purely for this purpose – are therefore also
found in the new building. For ensuring good orientation, these were
effectively applied in the large market building measuring approxima-
tely 2,500 square metres according to departments and well visible at
a distance as well: In the foyer, the customer is thus welcomed in a
spacious hall that – with suspended grids framed in black metal pro-
files – separates the main access area from the actual supermarket
and all the other retail spaces such as the integrated bakery and the
beautigul flower shop. Some of the grids have furthermore been
equipped with deep-green plants which produce an appealing setting
for the fruit- and vegetable department of the supermarket. In con-
trast, surfaces with copper sheets and eye-catching, white graphics in-
dicate the deep-freeze section and thereby give the product segment
a warm and, at the same time, high-quality appearance; the beverage-
and spirits range has its place in a brick, rather stark setting. Freestan-
ding refrigerated counters stand out from this zone as thematic is-
lands and are strikingly elegant with high-gloss tiles and white surfa-
ces. The deli counter which is positioned in the back of the market
area is the heart of the supermarket. Inspired by industrial blast fur-
naces and old industrial shafts, the goods displayed are topped with
impressively illuminated form elements and the panes to the food-
preparation rooms are orange. This has nothing in common with the
kind of rough industrial charm currently seen in many other places.
Rather, the impression is created of high-end design giving the custo-
mer the good feeling of trend-conscious urbanity, tidiness and also hy-
giene. For a food retailer, this kind of interpreting “industrial charm”
