S chiltigheim, ein beschauliches Städtchen unweit von Straßburg, gelangte im 19. Jahr-
hundert als Standort für die Produktion von alkoholischen Getränken zu einer ge-
wissen Bekanntheit. Auch heute werden in der „Stadt der Bierbrauer“ noch einige über-
regional bekannte Biere hergestellt. Es ist also kein Wunder, dass der Stadtkern der Ge-
meinde von einigen mehr oder weniger gut erhaltenen Brauerei- und Brennereigebäuden
geprägt ist. Eines dieser Objekte hat das Architekturbüro Dominique Coulon & Associés
nun zu einer Markthalle mit integrierter Kunstgalerie umgebaut. Der basilikale Bau – der
nicht nur als Distillerie, sondern in späteren Jahren auch als Lagerhaus für Fleischwaren
oder als Kulturzentrum genutzt wurde – sollte nach einer Idee des ehemaligen Bürger-
meisters zu einem möglichst einladenden öffentlichen Raum im Zentrum der Stadt wer-
den. Eine Vorgabe, die die Architekten nur zu gern in die Tat umsetzten. So erzeugen die
ungewöhnliche Kombination der beiden Nutzungen, die auf verschiedenen Geschossen –
Marktflächen im Erdgeschoss und die Galerie im Obergeschoss –, aber mit verbinden-
dem Luftraum sozusagen „Tête-à-Tête“ koexistieren, und der interessante Umgang mit
dem Bestand – Teile der originalen Fassade konnten erhalten bleiben, während der Rest
mithilfe von Mauerwerk- und Sichtbetonwänden wiederauf- und umgebaut wurde – hier
ein sowohl optisch ansprechendes als auch inhaltlich stimmiges Gebäude. jn

Today as well, several brands of beer are still produced in the “town of brewers” which

nity is characterized by some more or less well-preserved brewery- and distillery buil-

ted and converted with walls of brickwork and exposed concrete.
