EINKAUFSZENTRUM GINZA SIX
IN TOKIO
Entwurf • Design Curiosity Inc., JP-Tokio
von • by Désirée Spoden
I t is considered one of the most expensive places in the world – Ginza in Tokyo. Now
the district attracts with a new shopping centre of superlatives: Ginza Six extends over
two blocks, is 47,000 square meters large, rises into the sky with 13 storeys above ground
and, in addition to stores and offices, also has a theatre, tourist information, restaurants
as well as a roof garden. Yet despite its gigantic dimensions, the Japanese architect Yoshio
Tani-guchi as well as the interior designer Nicolas Gwenael from Curiosity created a build-
ing on a human scale. For this purpose, they combined current design trends with tradi-
tional Japanese elements. While the façade of the upper seven office floors is uniformly
structured horizontally, the store façades are organized vertically. Designed in different
ways, they visually dissolve the building volume and remind of the traditional Japanese
curtains, the so-called noren. In the layout, an angled network of routes and stores takes
up the segmented structure of the Ginza side alleys und the huge dimensions of the centre
are thus counteracted on the inside. In the central the actual size of the upscale shopping
mall can to some degree be felt. In a three-dimensional luminous ceiling, inspired by the
typical Japanese hemp-flower motif and the traditional washi paper, the combination of
the traditional and the modern which determines the design becomes manifest.
