T here was not a lot left of the former goods depot near the central station of
Malmö. The brick building with a length of 50 metres was “topless”. Only the
gabled front sides showed that the ruin formerly had a saddle roof. Grass and
bushes had taken over the derelict place. Then Nina Totté Karyd and Martin Karyd
came and decided to bring back to life the depot which had been vacant for almost
60 years. All along, the two siblings, who together run the Annabostäder real-estate
company, had been dreaming of owning a market hall. In 2013, they commissioned
Wingårdhs with turning the run-down architectural relict into an attractive market
hall. Not even four years later, in November 2016, Malmö Saluhall opened its gates.
Since then, this market has operated by almost 20 vendors and restaurateurs who
leave nothing to be desired when it comes to treats. The focus is on regional pro-
ducts of the highest quality – class instead of mass. Freshly caught fish, hand-made
sausages, matured cheeses, unusual sandwiches, healthy vegetables, savoury bre-
ads, al dente pasta, imaginative pizzas from the wood-fired oven, falafel and bur-
gers, organic teas, hand-made chocolates and ice-cream flavours and, not last, aes-
thetically pleasing flower bouquets pamper all the senses. The applicants for the
stand spaces had to have especially one quality: a passion for their profession.
Docked-on: an annex expands the building
To produce sufficient space – approximately 1,500 square metres – for all these
offers, the base area of the depot had to be expanded with an annex. For this, the
architects mirrored the existing structure along its longitudinal axis. Two buildings,
one old and one new, are since then nestled together. Both were given new saddle
roofs, so that a striking entrance in the form of a twin gable resulted at the front side.
Due to the condition of the subsoil, only a part of the newly covered area could be
built on. A generous canopy was therefore designed above the main entrance. A gap
between the old and the new building lets daylight penetrate the market hall and
emphasizes the historic masonry. Wingårdhs Architects had the new wings clad with
corroded steel. This material takes up the industrial character of the location. The
previously aged steel and the naturally old bricks are in perfect harmony. On the
inside, the consistent stand concepts make for a harmonious overall appearance –
congruence instead of competition. Homogeneous floor covering as well as matte-
black steel girders, roof beams, luminaires, ventilation pipes and furniture ensure an
unostentatious-elegant basic atmosphere. The partitions between the stands are
consistently tiled in white and contrast with the aforementioned matte-black ele-
ments. Letterings and name plates follow the common rules. The products are defi-

Malmö’s new market hall is in
Malmö’s new market hall is highly praised on the relevant Internet portals. That

Saluhall is so popular is certainly also due to the fact that the whole western har-
bour district – Västra Hamnen – is gradually being transformed into an attractive resi-
dential and office district. Until 1986 and for more than 200 years, this is where
Kockums, the worldwide largest shipyard, was located beside other industries. Since
2001 – starting with the Bo01 European Housing Expo – and until 2030, sustainable
urban development is to be promoted in Västra Hamnen. The 190 metres high
Turning Torso by Santiago Calatrava has become a landmark which attracts visitors
from all over the world. Nearly ten kilometres of coastline, a sea promenade and
bathing possibilities on the Öresund provide excellent leisure options in the middle
of Sweden’s third largest city located in the very south of the country. The “green”
urban concept is also reflected in the fact that Malmö’s first bicycle apart hotel was
recently opened in Västra Hamnen. Ecological, sustainable, organic is the motto.
Malmö’s new market hall as well is allowed to go back to nature. In future, the ram-
pant vegetation which had overgrown the ruin is to flourish completely legally and
deliberately: on lattices provided, climbing plants are to work their way up the rust-
red Corten-steel façade …
