SMALL ANIMAL CLINIC
IN LUDWIGSBURG
Do pets have a sense for good interior design? If so,
then they will certainly feel well looked after in the
newly designed small animal clinic in Ludwigsburg.
The interior was designed by Stuttgart-based firm
SOMAA. And even if the design is of little importance
to the patients, at least the owners should benefit from
„Der emotionale Aspekt the bright and welcoming atmosphere.
ist ein zentraler Teil
der Therapie.“ B etween the residential estate comprising primarily of single-family
SOMAA houses and the industrial estate located in the Ossweil district of
Ludwigsburg, veterinarian Dr. Marc Goldhammer and his wife run a re-
nowned small animal clinic. His patients even come from the famous
Wilhelma, the zoo of the nearby state capital of Stuttgart. The treat-
ment and operating rooms are located on the ground floor of a plain,
unobtrusive commercial building. Stuttgart-based architecture and in-
terior design firm SOMAA has now given the more or less faceless ex-
terior an appealing and functional interior design. Office partner Hadi
A. Tandawardaja was responsible for the project. The commission pri-
marily involved the redesign of the reception zone and the waiting
areas. The practice has two waiting areas — not because German two-
class medicine has also become established in the animal world, but
to prevent possible territorial fights between the four-legged patients.
Cats in particular do not seem to like waiting for their treatment toget-
her with other animals. Also due to the separated waiting areas, the
clinic is now allowed to bear the "cat friendly" seal of approval. Tan-
dawardaja in turn poetically describes his design concept with the
image of a calm lake, "in the middle of which two islands rest, lined
by a birch forest". The mistresses and masters of the small animals
that are treated here can experience the implementation of this "pain-
ting" directly upon entering the clinic through a vestibule located in
front: The surface of the calm forest lake is a light-coloured, soft rubber
floor. Two upholstered seating islands in the CI colours of the clinic
"float" on this surface, while other seating elements emerge as niches
from the surrounding walls. The latter are clad entirely with light ma-
ritime pine panels, which form a mosaic that enlivens the room with
their differently structured and glazed surfaces. The reveals of doors
and wall projections are painted black to add striking highlights.
Water dispensers, washbasins and screens for media display are inte-
grated into the wall. In this way, practical functions and emotional in-
