PARACELSUS BAD &
KURHAUS IN SALZBURG
The Paracelsus Bad in Salzburg's historic old town is
the largest individual building project in the city this
decade and the first indoor swimming pool in Austria
to be subjected to a comprehensive sustainability ana-
lysis. It almost goes without saying that it was awar-
ded a certification in gold, especially when experien-
cing the atmospheric qualities on site
I f it weren't for the exciting façade of ceramic louvres, we would
have simply strolled past the Paracelsus Bad, Salzburg’s new public
bath. The five-storey volume is perfectly integrated between the Grün-

bathers and spa visitors enter the building on the rather introverted
plinth level and immediately get an idea of its clearly discernible ver-
tical layering. In a continuous movement, central and straight stairs
stretch through the three plinth levels towards the large skylight of the
swimming level. The incidence of daylight from above provides orien-
tation and pleasant natural lighting. Arriving in the pool hall, it seems
as if the building is divided on the third floor and continues as an out-
door space. The surrounding glazing makes the room appear light and
open and brings the beauty of the urban surroundings deep into the
interior. This impression is supported by the dynamic sweep of the
parametrically shaped ceiling landscape made of ceramic and alumi-
nium and by the materialisation of the water world by means of
bright ceramic surfaces, reflecting water and plenty of light. The sauna
and catering facilities hover above the bathing landscape with four

pool and a relaxation pool. This area is supported by a steel structure
with a 35-metre span that takes up the wave form. While the catering
area for swimming pool and sauna guests is installed on the fourth
floor "in the trough of the wave", the sauna world uses the free roof
level as a platform. Three saunas are designed with panoramic wind-
ows facing the city, while the central and largest sauna is preceded by
a lounge and focuses on the Mülln Parish Church. While the relaxa-
tion zone offers a free view of the hilly landscape, the feeling of bat-
hing above the roofs of the city culminates in the outdoor pool. The
special effect of the building is created by the dialogue of the new in-
teriors with the city’s treasures in the surroundings: the unobstructed
view of the Mirabell Gardens, the old town and the surrounding
