RESIDENTIAL BUILDING
NEAR THE GREAT WAL
An Italian-German coproduction in the Middle King-
dom: On a hillside property not far from the Great Wall
of China, MDDM Studio have designed a home which –
as the conversion of an underground fruit-tree storage
unit – has a sophisticated room division as a reaction
to the conditions of the slope and the building stock
without foregoing spacious and light-flooded interiors.
T o anyone who thinks of modern Chinese architecture, first of all
the well-known current mega buildings of the large metropoli-
tan regions of the country with billions of inhabitants probably come
to mind. Whether they are the CCTV Headquarters, the Shanghai
Schnitt • Section Tower or Beijing International Airport – what these projects have in
common is, above all, the total disregard of any scale or context! Yet
that China also offers smaller-scale, contemporary architecture is
shown, among others, with the example of the latest project by the
architects of MDDM Studio. For this, the Italian-German office, which
is based in Beijing, took on a commission for a site north of the city
7 which posed an exciting task due to its location on a slope with a
north-south orientation and the already existing development. Of the
2 building stock – an underground storage unit for fruit trees with a
base area of 21 by eleven metres – only the walls of natural stone

1 were to be preserved. In addition, at the north side of the building
3 soil was removed for adding a terrace which is continued inside as

5 well with the openly designed living- and dining area. This central
auf living room is provided with sufficient daylight due to an exten-
4 sive glass wall towards the north and an interior courtyard towards
the east whereas, towards the west, it is bordered by a wood-panel-
led garage box inserted into the building. From here, the bedrooms

are also accessed which are oriented towards the south wall of the
