                                                                                        NEAR THE GREAT WAL





                                                                                        An Italian-German coproduction in the Middle King-
                                                                                        dom: On a hillside property not far from the Great Wall
                                                                                        of China, MDDM Studio have designed a home which –
                                                                                        as the conversion of an underground fruit-tree storage
                                                                                        unit – has a sophisticated room division as a reaction
                                                                                        to the conditions of the slope and the building stock
                                                                                        without foregoing spacious and light-flooded interiors.


                                                                                        T   o anyone who thinks of modern Chinese architecture, first of all
                                                                                            the well-known current mega buildings of the large metropoli-
                                                                                        tan regions of the country with billions of inhabitants probably come
                                                                                        to mind. Whether they are the CCTV Headquarters, the Shanghai
                Schnitt • Section                                                       Tower or Beijing International Airport – what these projects have in
                                                                                        common is, above all, the total disregard of any scale or context! Yet
                                                                                        that China also offers smaller-scale, contemporary architecture is
                                                                                        shown, among others, with the example of the latest project by the
                                                                                        architects of MDDM Studio. For this, the Italian-German office, which
                                                                                        is based in Beijing, took on a commission for a site north of the city
                                                        7                               which posed an exciting task due to its location on a slope with a
                                                                                        north-south orientation and the already existing development. Of the
                                                        2                               building stock – an underground storage unit for fruit trees with a
                                                                                        base area of 21 by eleven metres – only the walls of natural stone

                                                      1                                 were to be preserved. In addition, at the north side of the building
                                           3                                            soil was removed for adding a terrace which is continued inside as
                                                                       5
                                                                 5                      well with the openly designed living- and dining area. This central
                                                                                        auf living room is provided with sufficient daylight due to an exten-
                                                                  4                     sive glass wall towards the north and an interior courtyard towards
                                                                                        the east whereas, towards the west, it is bordered by a wood-panel-
                                                                                        led garage box inserted into the building. From here, the bedrooms

                                                                                        are also accessed which are oriented towards the south wall of the

                                                                                        high ceilings and the indirect, natural lighting produce an atmosphe-
                                                                                        ric spatial impression which experiences dynamic and attractive
