                                                                             of the following three design approaches: (1) re-design - a revision or extension with
                                                                             new aspects and interventions; (2) re-use - the reuse of elements and components,
                                                                             quasi as raw building material, and (3) re-interpretation - the replacement of selec-
                                                                             ted components with the aim of enhancing the overall ensemble.
                                                                             A piece of furniture becomes a concept or vice versa - two ways


                                                                             In addition, two different approaches were possible for the design approach. On the
                                                                             one hand, a significant piece of furniture could be assumed and the design of the
                                                                             overall interior derived, or on the other hand, a detailed room concept with a strong
                                                                             idea could be derived from a representative piece of furniture. In the course of an
                                                                             object inspection, which took place six weeks before the beginning of the seminar,
                                                                             the genius loci were sensed, existing details were studied and the expectations of
                                                                             potential guests with regard to their surroundings were anticipated. During a six-
                                                                             day excursion from and through Switzerland to Italy, additional impressions were
                                                                             gathered. In addition to the examination of contemporary architecture in general,
                                                                             the focus was on hotel architecture and, in particular, the role that furniture can be
                                                                             ascribed to it. The journey thus formed an important part of the research on inno-
                                                                             vative implementations of accommodations and their fundamental positioning. to
                                                                             the demands of their guests. The design project was divided into several phases, the
                                                                             results of which were presented to all participating students and guest critics in the
                                                                             form of interim presentations. A ten-day intensive workshop was the prelude to the
                                                                             first phase and addressed the fundamental question of appropriate lighting in the
                                                                             bathroom. Exposure concepts and luminous objects were developed especially for
                                                                             this room and their effect was investigated using working models. The students
                                                                             were then free to continue the results and ideas gained as the basis for the further
                                                                             design or to focus on a new aspect. My design "Aloof" followed the first considera-
                                                                             tions of dissolving the closed, interior bathroom into its functions and removing the
                                                                             surrounding walls. The individual elements thus become part of the rest of the
                                                                             room, with each area experiencing just as much privacy as necessary. In the second
                                                                             step, the other primary functions of the hotel room were repositioned through a
                                                                             conscious reorganization. Particular attention was paid to the sleeping area, which
                                                                             was staged as follows: The bed, aligned with the central axis, is part of a pedestal
                                                                             in the centre of the room. The counterpart is the transverse beam on the ceiling.
                                                                             This divides the room into two areas, which jump in height and are treated differ-
                                                                             ently in their materiality. While the front, deeper area conveys a cooler and more di-
                                                                             stanced impression, the ascent to the pedestal forms a strong contrast and thus
                                                                             marks the private retreat. In the sense of reinterpretation, the design makes use of

                                                                             A furniture design is turned into reality


               Eine Ausstellung zeigt alle neuen Impulse für das Hotel. • An exhibition shows all new impulses for the hotel.  Based on the presentation of the newly worked out intermediate stands, the next
                                                                             step for me was to design the furniture. It serves and underlines the image of fast-
                                                                             paced life and life out of a suitcase. Standing on castors, the mobile suitcase shelf
                                                                             dominates the front area of the room and at the same time zonates the largely open
                                                                             space. Thus the "heavy servant" separates the entrance area and the shower and of-
                                                                             fers storage and wardrobe on one side, towel rails and space for utensils on the
                                                                             other. In its materiality, it picks up on its surroundings and thus communicates with
                                                                             them. For the true-to-scale implementation, a heavy concrete base was cast in
                                                                             which the hotel safe can be inserted, the steel frame welded and a lacquered per-
                                                                             forated sheet clamped. Shimmering in the evening light, the servant literally alludes
                                                                             to a golden cage. The presentation at the end of the semester and the subsequent
                                                                             exhibition required an appropriate staging that would do justice to the heteroge-
                                                                             neity of all the project results. In the form of posters, models and the 1:1 conversi-
                                                                             ons, the works found their expression on a building site converted for this purpose.
                                                                             Subsequently, the entire exhibition was loaded and reassembled in the MMC, di-

                                                                             images were generated for the documentation of the entire project and the project
                                                                             was completed in an appreciative way.
