E ine Kirche der etwas anderen Art: Wie der Name schon verrät, handelt es sich hier-
bei um ein schwimmendes Gotteshaus. Vielmehr um ein für England typisches Nar-
rowboat, das durch das Londoner Architekturbüro Denizen Works zu einem sakralen Ort
umgebaut wurde. Neben dem Architekturtypus sticht besonders das kinetische Dach her-
vor: Von Hydraulikzylindern angetrieben, fächert sich ein transluzentes Segeltuch auf und
erweitert den Hauptraum zu einem nach außen extrovertierten Versammlungsort. Auch
die Innenraumgestaltung profitiert von einem flexiblen Möbelentwurf der PlanerInnen.
Folglich bieten die eingebauten Bänke aus schwarzem MDF Sitzgelegenheiten und Stau-
raum, und auch die maßgefertigten Hocker und Klapptische ermöglichen eine dynami-
sche Raumnutzung für 40 sitzende oder 60 stehende Personen. Nicht funktional, dafür
aber atmosphärisch wiederholt sich das von Lettnern inspirierte Muster im Außen- und
Innenraum und projiziert ein wanderndes Schattenspiel auf Wand, Boden und Möbeln.
Neben dem kirchlichen Gebrauch fungiert der anpassungsfähige Raum als Ort für ver-
schiedenste Nutzergruppen und Gemeindeaktivitäten: Von Eltern- und Krabbelgruppen
über Pilates- und Kunstkurse bis zu kulinarischen Veranstaltungen mit Livemusik ist alles
dabei. Im Zuge stetiger Veränderung durch wachsende Gemeinden im Osten Londons
soll The Floating Church als Alternative zu traditionellen Standorten und Gebäudetypen
eine verbindende Funktion zwischen den Gemeinden einnehmen. Lisa Klasberg
A church of a somewhat different kind: As the name already implies, this is an in-
novative floating place of worship. It is a narrowboat typical of England which
the London Denizen Works architectural office have turned into a sacral venue. Besi-
des the type of architecture, the kinetic roof is striking: Powered by hydraulic cylin-
ders, translucent sail cloth fans out and extends the main room into a place of as-
sembly oriented towards the outside. The interior design as well benefits from a fle-
xible furniture design by the planners: the built-in benches of black MDF offer seating
and storage and the custom-made stools and folding tables as well allow a dynamic
use of the room for 40 sitting or 60 standing worshippers. Not as to function but as
to atmosphere, the pattern inspired by rood screens is repeated outside and inside
and projects a wandering shadow play onto walls, floors and furniture. In addition to
being used as a church, the adaptable venue serves various groups of users and com-
munity activities: There is everything, from parents- and toddler groups to Pilates and
art courses to culinary events with live music. In the course of constant change due
to the growing communities in East London, The Floating Church is to connect the
