2 Seit 2000 gehört die Kulturlandschaft Wachau, wie das Tal der Donau zwischen
Melk und Krems in Niederösterreich heißt, zum Weltkultur- und -naturerbe der
UNESCO. Durch ihre besonderen geologischen und klimatischen Verhältnisse entstehen
auf rund 1.350 Hektar Weinbaufläche ganz eigenständige Weine – wie die Rieslinge und
Veltliner der Familie Högl, die seit mehr als fünf Jahrzehnten ein Weingut in der Markt -
gemeinde Spitz am Ende der Wachau besitzt. Den alten Hof erweiterten die Bregenzer
Archi tekten Elmar Ludescher und Philip Lutz nun um einen Neubau. Als architektoni -
sches Pendant zu den erlesenen Weinen, deren Geschmack die extremen Anbau bedin -
gungen widerspiegelt, greift das Gebäude die traditionelle Bauweise der Region mehrfach
auf: Mit dick verputzten Wänden, weiß ge kalkten Holz lamellen vor den Glasflächen
sowie dem mit Eternit eingedeckten Dach verschmilzt es mit der historisch gewachsenen
Kulturlandschaft. Erst von Nahem offenbart sich der Neubau als moderne Interpretation
der Bautradition. Bereits die Form des Baukörpers signalisiert, dass er zwei Funktionen
erfüllt: Zum einen umfasst er eine Weinproduktion, die sich im größeren Sattel dach haus
entlang der Straße erstreckt; zum anderen Räume für die Verkostung, die sich mit der
Schauseite zum Vorplatz öffnen. Auf der oberen Ebene wird die einzigartige Dachform in
einem komplett mit Holz ausgekleideten, lichtdurchfluteten Innenraum erlebbar. vc

Melk and Krems in Lower Austria is called, belongs to the UNESCO World Cultural
and Natural Heritage Sites. Thanks to its special geological and climatic conditions, on a
wine-growing area of approximately 1,350 hectares very unique types of wine are pro-
duced here – such as the Riesling and the Veltliner from the Högl Family who, have
owned a winery in the market community of Spitz. Bregenz architects Elmar Ludescher
and Philip Lutz now complemented the old estate with a new building. As an architec-
tural counterpart to the exquisite wines reflecting the extreme growing conditions, the
building repeatedly takes up the region’s traditional construction method: With thickly
plastered walls, white-limed wooden slats in front of the glass surfaces as well as with
the roof covered with panels of asbestos cement, it blends into the historically grown cul-
tural landscape. Only from close up does the new construction reveal itself as a modern
interpretation of the building tradition. Already the form of the building indicates that it
has two functions: On the one hand, this where wine is produced in the larger saddle-
roof building extending along the street; on the other hand, here are also rooms for tast-
ing which open with their front sides towards the forecourt. On the upper level, one can
admire the unique roof shape in a light-flooded, completely wood-panelled interior.
