V orstandsetagen sind vielleicht die letzten heiligen Hallen unserer säkularen Welt.
Der Zugang zu ihnen ist streng limitiert. Ihre „Priester“ sind in den meisten Fällen
noch immer Männer, die von dort aus die Finanz-, Waren- und Dienstleistungswelt re-
gieren. Konservativ ist meist auch die Gestaltung. Teure Materialien, gedeckte Farben
und wuchtige Möbel verbinden sich zu einem gediegenen Herrenclub-Ambiente. Man
kann den Geruch schwerer Zigarren förmlich riechen und das Klacken der Eiswürfel in
kristallenen Whisky-Tumblern hören. Mit diesen Raum und Atmosphäre gewordenen
Insignien der Macht arbeitete nun auch das Architekturbüro Halleroed für die Gestal-
tung einer neuen Vorstandsetage in New York. Geschickt unterwanderten die Architek-
ten allerdings die klassischen Formen und lösten das allzu Ernste und Schwere durch
subtile Brechungen auf. Geblieben sind die edlen Materialien: Wandvertäfelungen aus
Makoré, Böden aus Marmor und Sandstein. Im Kontrast dazu liegt die Haustechnik
schamlos offen. Rohre, Kanäle und Leitungen an der Decke wurden lediglich grau „weg-
gestrichen“. Auch die schweren Möbel gibt es noch. Durch intensive, leuchtende Lack-
farben gewinnen sie jedoch eine zeitgenössische Note. Die eigentlichen Vorstandsbüros
liegen hinter Glastrennwänden an der Gebäudeperipherie. Um den Aufzugskern herum
entstand als Raum-im-Raum ein edelhölzerner Kubus für Lobby, Teeküche und WCs.
E xecutive floors are probably the last sacred halls of our secular world. Access is
strictly limited; their “priests”, however, are in most cases still men who from
here rule the worlds of finances, goods and services. The design is in most cases also
correspondingly conservative. Expensive materials, muted colours and massive furni-
ture combine into an upscale gentlemen’s club ambience. One can almost smell the
fumes of cigars and hear the clinking of the ice cubes in crystal whiskey tumblers.
The Halleroed architectural office also worked with these insignia of power turned
into space and atmosphere for designing a new executive floor in New York. However,
the architects cleverly subverted the classic forms and subtly dissolved what is too
serious and heavy. What remains are the noble materials: wall panelling of Makore,
floors of marble and sandstone. In contrast to this, the building technology is delibe-
rately revealed. Pipes, ducts and cables at the ceiling have merely been somewhat
“covered up” in grey. The heavy furniture also still exists. But thanks to intense, bright
lacquer, it is given a contemporary touch. The actual executive offices are behind glass
partitions at the periphery of the building. A cube of precious wood with the lobby,
tea kitchen and WCs produces a room-in-the-room around the elevator core.
