CASA BATLLÓ IN BARCELONA

gen. Den organischen Formen-Kanon des Modernisme interpretieren
Kumas wellenschlagende Aluminium-Vorhänge neu. In Konkurrenz tre-
I t is a prime example of Catalan Modernism and a UNESCO World
Heritage Site – Casa Batlló in Barcelona. Antoni Gaudí converted
and redesigned the residence on the Passeig de Gràcia between 1904
and 1906 for the aristocrat and textile entrepreneur Josep Batlló.
Today, the former residential and commercial building is one of the
most popular sights of the Catalonian design metropolis. In the 2,000-
square-metre “Casa Batlló 10D Experience”, visitors can now immerse
themselves in Gaudí’s world of ideas – a fantastic experience and sen-
sory world made possible by digital technology. For this occasion,
Kengo Kuma upgraded the central atrium and the “blind box” of the
emergency staircase with a permanent installation of chain curtains.
Over eight storeys, from top to bottom, from the attic to the former
coal cellar, this layer of chains continuously becomes darker. With this
gradation, the Japanese architect refers to Gaudí’s lighting scenarios
for Casa Battló: for example, the windows of the light-flooded house
become larger from top to bottom in order to facilitate the incidence
of daylight. Kuma’s undulating aluminium curtains reinterpret the
modernist canon of organic forms. They compete neither formally nor
materially with the architectural heritage. The autonomous, free-fal-
ling chain curtains playfully covers the existing building and envelops
