18. Biennale: The Laboratory of the Future

Mit ihrem Motto „The Laboratory of the Future“ fokussierte die Kuratorin der 18. Architek-
turbiennale Lesley Lokko nicht nur den Kontinent Afrika, sondern auch Themen, die mit
dem Einfluss des Biennale-Events auf die Bevölkerung Venedigs einhergehen. Dem Apell
der schottisch-ghanaischen Architektin, auf die sonst übliche Materialschlacht zu verzich-
ten, ressourcenschonend zu planen und Bestehendes in die Installationen zu integrieren,
folgte die Mehrheit der geladenen internationalen TeilnehmerInnen. So geriet die Mitte
Mai eröffnete Architektur-Schau zu einer eher leisen, nachdenklich machenden – und das
ist angemessen und gut so! Unbedingt anschauen – bis zum 26. November geöffnet! ps

With her motto “The Laboratory of the Future”, the curator of the 18 Architecture Bien-
nale Lesley Lokko focused not only on Africa, but also on themes connected to the
influence of the Biennale on the people of Venice. The majority of the invited international
participants followed the Scottish-Ghanaian architect’s appeal to dispense with the usual
battle of materials, to plan in a resource-saving way and to integrate existing elements.
Thus, the architecture show that opened in mid-May turned out to be a rather quiet,
