In a refurbished city villa, the Goldkammer, a small museum recently opened in the
Westend of Frankfurt, invites visitors to a journey on the trail of gold. Approximately
500 exhibits are shown with respective themes in seven underground tunnels and
chambers: from the origin of the valuable material 4.6 billion years ago to grave finds
and artefacts of early civilizations and antiquity as well as treasures salvaged from
sunken ships all the way to the collection of gold ingots of the Frankfurt Rothschild
banking family. The architects of HG Merz modelled the spatial atmosphere on the
burial chambers of the pyramids. Asymmetrical layouts, walls of rammed clay and
showcases of natural stone, marble and bronze produce small, intimate exhibition
areas. In contrast, the valuable freight from the bottom of the seas looks surprisingly
cool and clear in a setting of mysteriously illuminated, bluish shimmering glass
