RATHAUSPROVISORIUM

R eformierte Kirchen sind keine Sakralräume. Sie dienen der Versammlung, stellen
das Wort ins Zentrum. Daher konnte sich das deutsche Parlament 1848 in der
Frankfurter Paulskirche konstituieren. Und aus diesem Grund ist seit Kurzem auch ein
temporäres Parlament in der Zürcher Kirche Hard am Bullingerplatz untergebracht. Nach
ein ein halb Jahren Planungs- und Realisierungszeit konnte in den zuletzt wenig genutzten
Kirchenräumen aus den 1950er-Jahren ein Rathausprovisorium mit reversibler Ausstat-
tung eingerichtet werden. Ausgehend von der Kreuzform des Grundrisses entwickelten
die ArchitektInnen rund um Bertram Ernst, Erich Niklaus und Ursina Fausch eine zen-
tralisierte Sitzordnung und ließen Kanzel und Abendmahlstisch entfernen, sodass nun
die Verhandlung an die Stelle der Verkündigung tritt. Stirnwand und Orgel sind mit brei-
ten Filzbahnen behängt. Ein Leuchter aus dazu passenden Filzschleifen nimmt die für
den Ratsbetrieb notwendige Technik auf und fasst den Sitzungssaal von oben her über
drei große Ringe zusammen. Die Ergänzungen sind mit Respekt vor dem bestehenden
Materialkanon aus Backstein, Sperrholz und Beton ausgewählt – wenige blaue Akzente
weisen auf das Zürcher Stadt- und Kantonswappen hin. Ursprünglich war ein Rathaus-
Neubau oder ein aufwendiger Umbau des zu kleinen Altbaus geplant. Das Provisorium
– inzwischen auch schon „Rathaus Hard“ genannt – zeigt nun eine Alternative hierzu auf.
R eformed churches are not sacred spaces. This is why the German Parliament could
be constituted in the Frankfurt Paulskirche in 1848. For this reason, a temporary
parliament has recently been accommodated in the Zurich Hard Church at Bullinger-
platz. After a year and a half of planning and implementation, a provisional town hall
with reversible furnishings was set up in the church rooms from the 1950s, which had
been little used recently. Starting with the cruciform floor plan, the architects led by
Bertram Ernst, Erich Niklaus, and Ursina Fausch developed a centralised seating arran-
gement. They removed the pulpit and communion table, so that the proceedings now
take place where the preaching took place. The front wall and organ are adorned with
wide felt panels. A chandelier made of matching felt ribbons accommodates the neces-
sary technology for parliamentary procedures and frames the meeting room from above
with three large rings. The additions were chosen with respect for the existing materials,
including brick, plywood and concrete. A few blue accents reference the Zurich city and
cantonal coat of arms. Originally, there were plans for a new town hall or an extensive
renovation of the old building, which had become too small. The provisional arrange-
ment, now also known as “Rathaus Hard”, offers an alternative to these options.
