With their work titled "From Geometry to Topology", Italian ar-
chitect Stefano Corbo and his Chinese colleague Qianyu Liu
have undertaken an attempt to develop a new form of analysis
and representation of our built environment. Using six major
cities as examples — Cairo, Rome, Beijing, Paris, New York and
São Paulo — they show how the specific urban morphologies
and the respective architectural characteristics of the individ-
ual metropolises can be brought together in a uniform, graphic
representation. They explicitly understand the newly created,
computer-generated graphics not only as instruments of analy-
sis and comparability, but also as independent artistic works.
They describe the results as "assemblages" or three-dimen-
sional collages. On this spread and on pages 008/009 and
040/041 we show the respective reliefs of the cities of Cairo,
Rome and Beijing.
