enthusiasts in Paris. The roof also gives an enormous sense of lightness in contrast to the
solid structure of the building. Out of respect for the existing structure, the decision was
made to upcycle. All the wooden elements of the existing roof structure were dismantled
and taken to the Mathis company’s studio, where they were inspected and selected. The
Bonnardel carpentry workshop reused the elements that were still serviceable to make
furniture for the entrance hall – a reception desk, benches and some of the signage.

Upcycling the old roof beams into furniture

The carpentry workshop also prefabricated the 12 roof beams for the new movable roof.
The Douglas-fir glulam comes from certified organic forests in the Vosges and the Jura.
The frames were delivered by lorry and assembled on site. The renovation also included
improvements to the lighting, acoustics and reception areas of the pool. Technically, the
pool now meets the latest standards in terms of hygiene and usage, particularly with
regard to its water- and air quality. Another important task was to redesign the reception
and the circulation areas to make them more comfortable, evident and safe. As can be
seen in the cross-sections, the pool is not located underground but above ground, so Foto: Roger Henrard, 1952; Musée Carnavalet, Histoire de Paris
access to the pool is on the second floor of the building. There are now only grandstands
on the two long sides. Spectators reach their seats via the third floor. Last but not least,
the building was partially repainted. The distinctive concrete façade was only cleaned.
The old Piscine George-Vallerey now welcomes its guests in a bright, open and cheerful
way. The rejuvenation has been a success!
