DERMATOLOGY PRACTICE
IN BERLIN-SCHÖNEBERG
High, stucco-decorated ceilings and hinged doors – the
elegance of old Berlin flats also gives surgeries a special
flair. For redesigning a dermatology praxis in Schöne-
berg, however, the large parlours were to be subdivided
into smaller areas. With solid installations and trendy

rous green areas, Schöneberg – and in it above all the so-called
Bavarian district – ranks among the most attractive residential areas of
Berlin. Unlike in the socially challenged districts of the city, there is here
furthermore a relatively high density of medical specialists. Since just
recently, the dermatology practice of Dr Mandana Schindler has been
located in a 170 square-metre flat from the Wilhelminian era at Bam-
berger Straße as well. Already with just a few, space-defining interven-
tions, the Berlin planning team of studio karhard followed her request
for a re-organization of the flat that had already been used as a medical
practice before. Obliquely installed steel elements with structured gla-
zing now define a new reception- and waiting area in the front parlour
oriented towards the street. The rear treatment room oriented towards
the street has been newly designed with an internal access hallway and
a niche for blood sampling. Yet the solid steel profiles to not disturb the
distinguished spatial effect of the prestigious parlour. On the contrary:
they are respectfully arranged along the existing stucco rosettes,
middles of the walls and lintel heights and, with their material, produce
a contemporary counterpart to the delicate lines of the lead glazing in
the historic double-folding doors. The designers around Thomas Kar-
sten and Alexandra Erhard altogether skilfully play with cross connecti-
ons. The choice of materials and the detailed planning subtly take up
the main subject: different shades of flesh tones of the walls and textiles
merge into soft, bodily shapes due to the ribbed glass. The various de-
grees of fineness of all the surfaces – such as robust smooth leather for

room, loosely entangled loops of a 3D-knitted visual and acoustic
screen remind of the successive loss of elasticity of our cells. The com-
plete image becomes appealing due to the bold addition of coral-colou-
red armchairs that, with their shape alone, remind of puckered lips – a
