SPORTS STUDIO HAGIUS
IN BERLIN
„Erst ein zweiter, genauer Blick offenbart die Due to the digital age, the Postbank branch in Berlin-
für ein Sportstudio ungewöhnlich feinen Mitte closed its counter hall at Torstraße 105–107 in
2018, a historical listed building dating from 1902, which
Oberflächen und Materialkompositionen.“ was built by architect Nicolaysen. Gonzalez Haase rede-
veloped the former post office on the ground floor for
Pierre Jorge Gonzalez and with Nicolas and Timothy Hagius, founders and
operators of a newly coded sports studio.
F irst, Gonzalez Haase exposed two main axes by gutting the ground
floor and removing all non-structural elements, which made it
possible to experience the generous dimensions of the space. At each
end of the axis in the entrance area, a round disc made of matt stain-
less steel reflects the light and marks the yoga room in the west and
the changing area in the east. To the north are the training and treat-
ment rooms, which differ in terms of their material and lighting mix
that was coordinated according to their function: after all, the aim of
the holistic Hagius concept is to support the natural biorhythm. To
achieve this, light, sound and aroma stimuli in the studio have been
harmoniously coordinated with each other and with the respective
rooms. For the bio-dynamic lighting system, the architects separated
warm and cold light sources. The intensity of the light is controllable
and can be adjusted according to the time of day or type of training.
Depending on the setting, the light has activating-stimulating or cal-
ming effects. To support this, the entire ceiling was covered with a thin
insulating layer whose metallic surface reflects and evenly distributes
the light in the room. In the upper area of the four-metre-high grey
walls, the matt paint indirectly diffuses the light, while the lower, shiny
coat of paint reflects the flow of movement of the visitors. The clear
lines and lighting design that was combined with few natural materials
such as regional ash wood and natural rubber as flooring, aluminium,
marble, granite and linen was complemented by individually designed
furniture made of polished stainless steel – among other things for sto-
ring boxing gloves. Only at a second, closer look do the fine surfaces
and material compositions, which are unusual for a sports studio, re-
veal themselves. The purposefully restrained colour spectrum creates a
calming and sensual place where the focus is equally on body and
mind and supports the spectrum of the Hagius programmes offered in
the rooms of the former post office, which range from individual thera-
peutic one-to-one treatment and various courses to strength and boxing
