A ls Bürgerspital 1788 gegründet, ist das Städtische Klinikum Karlsruhe heute mit über
1500 Betten, 21 Fachkliniken und fünf angeschlossenen Instituten das größte Kran-
kenhaus in der Region Mittlerer Oberrhein. Dabei stammt gut die Hälfte der Klinikareal-
Bebauung aus dem Jahr 1907. Ursprünglich als Pavillonsystem gebaut, gestaltete sich die
Struktur zunehmend unwirtschaftlich. Ein Grund mehr, weshalb die Planungsgesellschaft
wörner traxler richter einen zentral auf dem Gelände situierten Neubau plante, der nicht
nur die neue Notaufnahme, alle OPs und sämtliche Intensivstationen aufnimmt, sondern
zugleich die historischen Gebäude unter- wie oberirdisch miteinander vernetzt. Der
jüngst fertiggestellte Gebäuderiegel dient damit als funktionales Zentrum und Zubringer
für das gesamte Klinikensemble mit separierten Wegesystemen für Logistik-, Besucher-
und Notfallverkehr. Um dem Krankenhaus darüber hinaus zu einer angenehmen und le-
bensbejahenden Ausstrahlung zu verhelfen, hat das Büro für visuelle Kommunikation
Uebele zehn positiv konnotierte Begriffe als Leuchtschriftzüge für die Eingangshalle ent-
worfen und für den gesamten Bau ein Orientierungssystem entwickelt, das über Farbflä-
chen und ebenfalls leuchtende, botanische Pflanzennamen funktioniert. So heißt bei-
spielsweise einer der Orientierungspunkte nicht einfach nur „5b“, sondern deutlich ein-
prägsamer „5b Johanniskraut“ – außergewöhnlich und alltagstauglich zugleich!

F ounded in 1788 as a public hospital, the Karlsruhe Municipal Hospital, with over
1,500 beds, 21 specialist clinics and five affiliated institutes, is today the largest hos-
pital in the Middle Upper Rhine region. At the same time, a good half of the hospital
area dates back to 1907. Originally built as a pavilion system, the structure became in-
creasingly uneconomical. One more reason for the planning company wörner traxler
richter to design a new building centrally located on the grounds, which serves to ac-
commodate the new emergency room, all operating theatres and intensive care units,
but at the same time to link the historical buildings both above and below ground. The
newly completed building block thus serves as a functional centre and connector for the
entire hospital ensemble with separate route systems for logistics, visitor and emergency
traffic. In order to give the hospital a pleasant and life-affirming aura, büro uebele visu-

in the entrance hall and developed an orientation system for the entire building that
functions via coloured areas and likewise illuminated botanical plant names. For exam-
ple, one of the orientation points is not simply called “5b”, but much more memorably
“5b Johanniskraut” (“5b St. John’s Wort”) – both unusual and suitable for everyday use!
