Mit unsichtbarer Hand und doch ausdrucksvoll restaurierten David
Chipperfield Architects das Jugendstil-Sanatorium Dr. Barner im
Harzer Kurort Braunlage. Das letzte erhaltene Grandhotel-Sanato-
rium in Deutschland wurde seit seiner Errichtung durchgehend als
Fachklinik genutzt und besticht heute durch den vollständigen Er-
haltungszustand von Einrichtung und Mobiliar. Restaurierung und
Rekonstruktion greifen in der Instandsetzung der opulent ausge-
statteten Gemeinschaftsräume nahtlos ineinander.

David Chipperfield Architects restored the art nouveau building of
the Dr. Barner Sanatorium in Braunlage, a spa town in the Harz re-
gion, in an invisible and yet expressive way. The last remaining
grand hotel sanatorium in Germany has been continuously used
as a specialist clinic since it was built and today impresses with
the complete preservation state of its interior and furniture. Res-
toration and reconstruction interlock seamlessly in the refurbish-
ment of the opulently furnished common rooms.
