                                                                                        IN HEIDELBERG



                                                                                        The task for the team consisting of 12:43 Architekten and
                                                                                        Schmucker und Partner was to transfer the highest stan-
                                                                                        dards as to technology and hygiene into an aesthetically
                                                                                        appealing interior. The transformation of the five-storey
                                                                                        office building from the 1980s into an eye surgery center
                                                                                        succeeded the designers with bravura. No wonder: Lars-
                                                                                        Erik Prokop of 12:43 was selected as the INsider 2017.

                                                                                        N   o doubt most patients imagine an ophthalmological day clinic
                                                                                            with treatment- and operating rooms to look very different – but
                                                                                        this was exactly the request by the building client, a Heidelberg oph-
                                                                                        thalmologist, and the intention of the architects and the interior desig-
                                                                                        ners. An area of 1,400 square metres extending over nine split levels in
                                                                                        a five-storey corner building in Bismarckplatz in Heidelberg was the
                                                                                        initial situation to be renovated and redesigned by the planners. Yet in
                                                                                        addition to the stipulation to design an exclusive feel-good ambience
                Ebene 1: Post-OP-Ruhezone • Level 1: postoperative resting zone  Ebene 3: Kurzwarten • Level 3: for briefly waiting  with the look of a luxury hotel for the patients, the goal was also to
                                                                                        include room for office  workstations and extensive technology. The
                                                                                        already existing structuring into split levels very much suited the diver-
                                                                                        se uses and the demand for an open, aesthetically designed interior.
                                                                                        As a result, the patients are now welcomed on level 4 in a lobby desig-
                                                                                        ned with solid-wood walls and dark steel elements resembling a loft
                                                                                        and wait there in comfortable alcoves or seating areas – on level 4
                                                                                        even by a flickering open fire – to then proceed to the confidential
                                                                                        atmosphere of the spacious, soundproof examination rooms on levels
                                                                                        5 to 8. Away from the more highly frequented level 2, the necessary
                                                                                        procedures take place in three glazed surgery units and, on level 1, the
                                                                                        patients recover in postoperative resting zones which are equipped
                                                                                        with comfortable seating niches and recliners with cushions and blan-
                                                                                        kets – all to make them feel like in the first-class section of renowned
                                                                                        airlines. Solid oak, brass details and genuine-leather covering add
                                                                                        accents to the wall-, ceiling- and floor areas in black and grey and pro-
                                                                                        duce the desired upscale-elegant overall impression. The deliberately
                                                                                        chosen dark colouring furthermore meets the client’s request to do wit-
                                                                                        hout too bright and flashy colours for the benefit of the patients with
                                                                                        eye diseases. Also contributing to the noticeable but unobtrusive com-
                                                                                        fort are the state-of-the-art air conditioning, height-adjustable furniture
                                                                                        and barrier-free sanitary zones. The open cable routing in the lounges
                                                                                        emphasizes the industrial look of the levels and is a pleasant contrast
                                                                                        to the almost luxurious interior design – in any respect and for the
