D er italienische Architekt und Ingenieur Carlo Ratti ist hierzulande vor allem als Kura-
tor der diesjährigen Architektur-Biennale in Venedig bekannt. Der Gründungspartner
des Turiner Büros CRA–Carlo Ratti Associati lehrt außerdem am Politecnico di Milano und
am MIT in Chicago. In den Giardini der Biennale ist noch bis 23. November seine Ins-
tallation „Post Office Pod: Working from Everywhere” zu sehen, ein modulares System
zum Arbeiten im Freien. Für CRA sind Arbeitsplätze fortwährende Experimentierfelder. Das
haben die ArchitektInnen bereits mit dem Headquarter der Fondazione Agnelli in Turin
oder der Renovierung von Oscar Niemeyers Palazzo Mondadori in Mailand demonstriert.
Im Zentrum der piemontesischen Hauptstadt konnten Carlo Ratti und Team unlängst ein
bestehendes Gebäude in das „Open Innovation Center“ der Sella Group transformieren.
Auf 5500 Quadratmetern bündelt der Finanzdienstleister dort verschiedene Geschäftsbe-
reiche, um Veränderungen voranzutreiben. Konzipiert ist diese Arbeitslandschaft als Folge
von Plätzen. Als Vorbild diente die italienische „Piazza“ – ein Ort des Austauschs und zu-
fälliger Begegnungen. Räumlich manifestiert sich das Thema Kommunikation in diversen
informellen Arbeitsplätzen. Denn Carlo Ratti ist überzeugt: „Wir glauben, dass physische
Räume auch weiterhin eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Förderung von Innovationen spie-
len werden.“ Ein Highlight sind die in der Höhe gestaffelten, luftigen Office-Terrassen.

I talian architect and engineer Carlo Ratti is best known in this country as the curator
of this year’s Architecture Biennale in Venice. The founding partner of the Turin-based
firm CRA–Carlo Ratti Associati also teaches at the Politecnico di Milano and at MIT in
Chicago. His installation Post Office Pod: Working from Everywhere, a modular system
for working outdoors, can be seen in the Giardini of the Biennale until 23rd November.
For CRA, workplaces are ongoing fields of experimentation. The architects have already
demonstrated this with the headquarters of the Fondazione Agnelli in Turin and just as
much with the renovation of Oscar Niemeyer’s Palazzo Mondadori in Milan. In the centre
of the Piedmontese capital, Carlo Ratti and his team recently transformed an existing
building into the Sella Group’s Open Innovation Centre. The financial-services provider
has brought together various business areas on 5,500 square metres to drive change. This
working landscape is designed as a series of squares. The Italian piazza – a place of exch-
ange and chance encounters – served as a model. Spatially, the theme of communication
is manifested in various informal workspaces. Carlo Ratti is convinced: “We believe that
physical spaces will continue to play a crucial role in catalyzing innovation.” Definite
highlights are the airy office terraces, which are staggered in height.
