F ür viele ist der Austausch mit Kollegen beim Mittagessen unerlässlich, so auch in der
unkonventionellen Werbeagentur Mother. Hier hat der Lunch eine ganz besondere
Bedeutung, denn die Agentur wurde 1996 während der Mittagspause an einem Küchen-
tisch gegründet. Jetzt hat das Innenarchitekturbüro Holloway Li das 315 Quadratmeter
große Erdgeschoss im Stadtteil Shoreditch so umgestaltet, dass tagsüber kollaborative
Arbeitsplätze und eine Kantine für 300 MitarbeiterInnen entstehen und nachts eine viel-
seitige Galerie. Eigens dafür entwarfen Alex Holloway und Na Li den ikonischen Tisch
„Big Red“, der neben der Funktion als Arbeits- und Esstisch zusammengestellt auch als
Eventbühne genutzt werden kann. Wie ein Surfbrett besteht er aus einem strukturellen
Schaumkern, der von einer dünnen Harzschicht umgeben ist, was ihn sehr leicht und
stabil macht. Stellt schon der Agenturname eine Hommage an die Schöpferinnen der
Mitarbeiterschaft dar, beherbergt die zur Lounge umfunktionierte Galerie die „Wall of
Mothers“, eine Sammlung von Portraits der Mütter aller Angestellten – wie in jedem Büro
der weltweit agierenden Agentur. Das Konzept der DNA-Weitergabe findet sich auch in
der Gestaltung, und so wurde altes Inventar in neues verwandelt: Die Stahlkonstruktion
des Empfangstresens erhielt ein dezentes Makeover in Form einer leuchtenden Verklei-
dung, und aus den alten, roten Sitzbänken entstanden die Beistelltische für die Lounge.
F or many, socializing with colleagues over lunch is essential, and the unconventional
advertising agency Mother is no exception to this. Lunch has a very special meaning
here, as the agency was founded at a kitchen table during the lunch break in 1996. Now
the interior-design firm Holloway Li has redesigned the 315 square-metre ground-floor in
the Shoreditch district to create collaborative workspaces and a canteen for 300 emplo-
yees during the day and a versatile gallery at night. Alex Holloway and Na Li designed
the iconic Big Red tables especially for this purpose, which, in addition to its function
as a work- and dining table, can also be put together and used as an event stage. Like
a surfboard, it consists of a structural foam core surrounded by a thin layer of resin,
which makes it very light and stable. If the agency name itself is a tribute to the women
who have given birth to the employees, the gallery converted into a lounge houses the
Wall of Mothers, a collection of portraits of the mothers of all employees – as in every
office of the global agency. The concept of passing on DNA is also reflected in the design,
with old fixtures and fittings being transformed into new ones: The steel structure of the
reception desk was given a subtle makeover in the form of bright panelling and the old
red benches were turned into side tables for the lounge.
