                                                                                    designed its own office. Where prototypes and miniatu-
                                                                                    res were once created, the space is now used for the cre-
                                                                                    ative design and planning of architectural projects.


                                                                                    O   n the street side is the first of the two buildings, which is part of a
                                                                                        two-storey row of houses. Whereas the previously crusty sandsto-
                                                                                    ne façade has lost the traces of time after cleaning, the historic inscripti-
                                                                                    on “L. Aubert Modeleur” still adorns the lintel of the garage door, which
                                                                                    A6A has turned into the main entrance of its new office. Fitting, since
                                                                                    the architects’ model-making workshop is located here today. Polished
                                                                                    limestone-concrete flooring, the exposed brickwork and the minima-
                                                                                    list birch-wood shelving harmonize in a functional, calm atmosphere.
                                                                                    A white curtain divides the open-plan reception- and workshop space
                                                                                    with a material library. The transparent fabric provides a view of the
                                           Grundriss 1. Obergeschoss • Floor plan level +1  garden that connects the two buildings. Enclosed at the sides by walls,
                                                                                    a kind of modern hortus conclusus is created that unites architecture
                                                                                    and nature and produces an unexpected calm in the urban hustle and
                                                                                    bustle. The garden was paved with demolition material, with wooden
                                                                                    planks put down at the sides and leading on to the former warehouse
                                                                                    building with its diamond-shaped floor plan. Due to its ruinous condi-
                                                                                    tion, only the outer walls and the filigree steel support structure of the
                                                                                    existing building have been preserved. A6A organizsed the conversion
                                                                                    in such a way that the complete building envelope, meaning the space,
                                                                                    remains perceptible in its entire height and width. The free-standing
                                           Querschnitt • Transversal section        construction made of birch plywood, in which separate areas such as
                                                                                    meeting rooms, kitchen and toilet are integrated, is striking. A quarter-
                                                                                    turn staircase leads up to the “roof terrace” of this extremely aesthetic
                                                                                    room-in-room solution. Workstations with a view are located along the
                                                                                    attica. This installation follows the lintel height of 3.50 metres on the
                                                                                    façade. Above this height, the interior surfaces of the exterior walls are
                                                                                    coated with light-grey acoustic spray plaster, which is continued on the
                                                                                    underside of the pitched roof; below this, the walls are clad in white.
                                                                                    The steel support structure of the building was reinforced and painted
                                                                                    in the same white colour as the ceiling fans and linear lighting was
                                                                                    attached to it. The concrete floor was poured and polished by the archi-
