D ünen, Küstenheide und Wälder bestimmen das Landschaftsbild des ältesten Natio-
nalparks Dänemarks ganz im Norden des Landes auf der Insel Vendsyssel-Thy. Seit
2007 steht das 24.370 Hektar große Gelände samt entsprechenden Strandabschnitten
unter Schutz. Um Wanderer und Naturliebhaber jeder Couleur über Freizeitaktivitäten
sowie Flora und Fauna zu informieren, beauftragte der Thy National Park Loop Architek-
ten mit der Realisierung eines Besucherzentrums in dem etwa 680 Einwohner zählen-
den Fischer- und Urlaubsort Vorupør: Mithilfe der Landschaftsarchitekten SLA geplant,
scheinbar in die Dünenlandschaft eingegraben, markiert der Neubau einen effektvol-
len Übergang von Dorfstruktur zu Nationalpark. Zugang zur Ausstellungshalle erhalten
Besucher*innen über drei in die künstlich angelegte Düne eingestemmte Schneisen aus
Ortbeton-Wandscheiben, die den Wechsel von außen nach innen schwellenlos ausbil-
den. Die windgeschützten Außenräume sorgen darüber hinaus – zusammen mit einem
schmalen Oberlicht in der Halle – für eine gute natürliche Belichtung, lenken den Blick
in die Umgebung und sollen zusätzlich der jeweils herrschenden Wetterstimmung Wir-
kungsraum geben. Für den Innenausbau hielten sich die Planer – inspiriert von der
rauen Schönheit des Nationalparks - an natürliche, pure Holz- und Beton-Oberflächen-

D unes, coastal heath and forests dominate the landscape found of Denmark’s
oldest national park, in the far north of the country on the island of Vendsyssel-
Thy. Since 2007, the 24,370-hectare area, including the various beach sections, has
been under protection. In order to inform hikers and nature lovers of all kinds about
leisure activities as well as about the local flora and fauna, the Thy National Park
commissioned Loop architects to design a visitor centre in the fishing- and holiday
resort of Vorupør, which has about 680 inhabitants: With the help of the SLA lands-
cape architects and seemingly buried in the dune landscape, the new building marks
an effective as well as attractive transition from village structure to national park.
Visitors gain access to the exhibition hall via three aisles of in-situ concrete wall
panels cut into the artificially created dune, which form the passage from outside
to inside without thresholds. The wind-protected exterior spaces – together with a
narrow skylight in the hall – also ensure good natural lighting, direct the view into
the surroundings and are also intended to give the prevailing weather moods space
to take effect. Inspired by the rugged beauty of the national park, the planners stuck
to natural, pure wood and concrete surface qualities for the interior fittings, which
