ters and timber framers. Wood is also the defining element for the building envelope:
Fir wood was charred using a traditional method, making it more resistant to weather
and pests. In contrast, there is the façade greening, which also serves as sun protection
and filters out fine particles.
Aesthetic scraps, carbonised wood and climbing plants
To ensure sufficient shading, it is necessary for the plants to grow upwards from each
storey. A hydroponic system allows for the direct attachment of the plant boxes to
the façade. Another advantage of the plants is that they shed their leaves in winter,
thus allowing sunlight into the building in the colder months – this is another reason
why we chose ntaive plants. Depending on the amount of precipitation, the plants
are supplied with nutrients by means of an automatic, low-maintenance irrigation
system. Natural materials also create a pleasant atmosphere indoors. Solid wood
walls were left with visible wooden surfaces and treated only with a breathable var-
nish. Non-load-bearing interior walls were finished with clay plaster, which maintains
humidity at an average of 50 percent and absorbs pollutants. This material provides a
high-quality surface that is easy to repair in case of damage. The flooring on the upper
levels was made of dry screed, consisting of corrugated cardboard and compacted
quartz sand. This allows for separation at the end of the service life and facilitates
environmentally friendly disposal – especially compared to cement screed. The dry
screed was covered with linoleum. Schnitt • Section
