COWORKING REPLICA
HOUSE IN LONDON
It is intentional that co-working brings together a
"colourful" mixture. Independence and collaboration
Hallway
as well as mutual support are the focus of this working
model. In a former church in London, a new co-wor-
king space is given its architectural equivalent not only

Living / this was the initial idea of the architects from Surman Weston when

they created a temporary work space in a former Methodist church,
which can be easily converted into an apartment at a later date. After
all, the rooms have combined both from the very beginning: a homely

atmosphere and flexible work areas. By inserting two separate, lateral
mezzanine levels, the main area at ground level - which serves as an
open-plan office - retains its open and bright impression as a double-
height space. The adjoining kitchen is also characterised by an open-

rence room and a model building workshop have been set up on the
mezzanines. These elements symbolically provide the backdrop - the
white canvas. Intensified by the white wooden truss construction,
which was sandblasted to remove the decades-old layers of paint, and
the combination of half-timbered, panel and ceiling elements all rende-
red white as well as kitchen units made of enamel and ceramics, the
outcome is a variety of textures which, however, subtly remain in the
background. They perfectly highlight the protagonist, stained glass, as
an allusion to the former use of the building as a church. Based on the

geometry of the construction, the coloured glass panes - connected in a

ons: they zone without completely separating the rooms, connect the
levels vertically and horizontally, and at the same time indicate the for-
mer cultural use of the building. Simultaneously, they provide an exci-
ting play of colours when light enters through the upper window strip.
One can easily imagine that this design supports the creativity of the
architecture and illustration office that is currently using the co-working
space, as well as create a warm, cosy living space, which can then offer
a large living and dining area as well as rather secluded additional spa-
