Mexico City macht diese Stadt für Sie attraktiv? Haben Sie auch einen Lieblingsort?
Wenn man die Metropolregion berücksichtigt, sind es sogar über zwanzig Millionen
Einwohner. Nach meiner Jugend in der niedersächsischen Provinz und dem Studium in

Transportmittel, fasziniert mich diese Stadt. Die Menschen sind sehr offen und unbeküm-
mert und das kulinarische Angebot ist ausgezeichnet, sogar auf den Straßenmärkten.
Mittlerweile hat sich hier auch eine Fahrradkultur etabliert, und kulturell gesehen bietet
Mexiko City ein großes Programm zu günstigen Preisen. Ich halte mich gerne in der
Cineteca Nacional, dem größten Programmkino der Stadt, auf oder in der Ciudad
Universitaria, auf dem Campus der UNAM, der Universidad Nacional Autónoma de
México. Dieses UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe ist eine grüne Oase in der dicht besiedelten
Stadt. Außerdem ziehen mich die Markthallen und Straßen im historischen Zentrum an,
wo man allerlei Kurioses findet.

r Welche Tipps haben Sie für junge Architekten, die sich ebenfalls mit dem
Gedanken tragen, in Mexiko zu arbeiten?
Ich kann jedem empfehlen, eine Zeit lang in Mexiko zu verbringen. Der ein oder andere
braucht vielleicht eine Weile, um sich an die Mentalität der Leute und den Rhythmus der
Stadt zu gewöhnen. Spanische Sprach kennt nisse sind von Vorteil. Man kann sich diese
aber auch vor Ort aneignen. Es ist kein Problem, zunächst mit einer Aufenthalts-
genehmigung für sechs Monate als Tourist einzureisen und später eine Arbeitserlaubnis
zu beantragen. Als Ausländer hat man es manchmal sogar leichter einen Job zu bekom-
men. Architekten sind in Mexiko recht angesehen. Die Verdienste sind höher als in vielen
anderen Berufen. Aller dings hängt dies sehr von der Bürogröße und vom Bewerberprofil
ab. Komplizierter ist die Wohnungssuche, besonders wenn man in angesagten Vierteln

Großstädte erreicht, und dies bei geringeren Gehältern.

H éctor Esrawe is an industrial designer and runs a multidisciplinary office for
interiors and furniture. Would you offer us a glimpse into his office?
There is a broad spectrum of projects and this is also reflected in the team. Among the
approximately 40 employees are architects, interior designers and graphic designers and
some of whom come from other countries of Latin America or from Europe. For all the
projects, there is intense work on the concepts. Héctor attaches much importance to just
the right choice of materials and detailed planning. For individual projects Esrawe Studio
also designs and manufactures the furnishings. This results in interesting insights into
specific details, for instance in the joining of materials.

Esrawe Studio also cooperates with other local architectural offices …
Yes, for some of the projects there is stimulating cooperation with other Mexican offices
such as Rojkind Arquitectos and Cadena + Asociados Concept Design. With the latter, we
last worked together on the Gelatoscopio project, an ice cream parlour which stimulates
the various senses. Gelatoscopio is inspired by imaginary, fantastic machines and
equipped with kaleidoscopes, magnifying glasses and mirrors which require interaction
with the customers while they choose the various aromas and flavours.

Esrawe Studio was able to design two remarkable upscale restaurants for Tori Tori
together with Rojkind Arquitectos. What was your contribution?
For the Tori Tori Altavista restaurant project in the district of San Angel, 12 kilometres
southwest of the historic centre, I worked on the detailed planning and attended the com-
plete construction process. Each Tori Tori restaurant has a different style with a distinct
vocabulary of materials. In the Tori Tori Altavista, impressive travertine surfaces which
form the ceiling contrast with walnut and holm oak as well as brass elements. The coop-
eration with the metal constructors was very exciting since many details, such as the spi-
ral staircase, were developed with the aid of mock-ups.

How vibrant should we picture the architectural scene in Mexico City?
Starting some years ago, Mexico City has been experiencing a boom in architecture and
design. Many quite young offices influence the current discourse in architecture and
some of them are interlinked with the most important universities. In addition, festivals

ized by the Arquine publishing house make important contributions. Furthermore Mexico
City will be the World Design Capital 2018.
