A t the beginning of the summer term of 2017, the following task was formulated at
Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences: to design simple and mobile accommoda-
tion for persons in need, homeless people, working nomads and students. The designs
were to focus on the quality of living and to show how rooms with ample functionality
can be produced. It was self-evident that the various groups of users had to be analysed
first. We were interested in how it happens that people suffer hardship and to what extent
they are supported by the welfare net. In addition, we wanted to know how the building
authority faces the situation with regard to small mobile constructions. From this knowl-
edge pool, highly differentiated and varied solution approaches have now resulted. The

move. There is sufficient storage space in it for travel accessories and room for a restful
sleep. Like in a tent, the side walls of the trailer can be individually opened. The reclining
surface thus serves as seating at the same time. Stability is ensured with fold-out legs. This
allows the cyclist to participate in bicycle tours when the supports are not used. The Lay
Down concept was developed for students, pupils and trainees who are looking for a rea-
sonable accommodation close to the educational facilities in a new city. Several modules
stacked on top of each other are standing on an unused meadow close to Rosenheim
University of Applied Sciences. The curved arrangement of the modules produces an in-
between area which can be jointly used, where one can meet or relax in a hammock. A
module consists of two residential units and a sanitary cell in the middle. The inside floor
area of a residential unit measures merely 4.4 square metres with an above-average room
height of 3.3 metres. The height is necessary to allow for a second level for the sleeping
area in the residential units. The sanitary cell’s height of 2.5 metres is furthermore used
as a rainwater storage tank for flushing the toilet. In the living room there is a small kitchen
unit, a sleeping area and storage space. The small floor area requires specific furniture
with several functions. Attention was paid to the use of resource-saving and recyclable
materials inside and outside. The (L)oftmals concept is a solution for people who arrive in
a new and unfamiliar city and are looking for accommodation there. With this concept, a
kind of long-term hostel is to be provided into which one can book by phone or online.
For the desired duration, one moves into a module which has been designed to be space-
saving and which meets many needs thanks to its high functionality. There is a bed at a
height of two metres, a cupboard and a shelf unit which in turn contains a fold-out guest

bed, a desk and a height-adjustable bench. Arranged in a row, many of these modules
find room in vacant warehouses or office buildings. The already existing toilets, showers
and kitchens there are used as common rooms. This encourages contact with people and
offers newcomers a good base for finding their bearings in the new surroundings and for
integrating. A further design focuses on mobile accommodation for the homeless. The
Home Street Home concept has been developed to make difficult everyday life easier for
the homeless. The foundation of the design is a shopping cart into which space for sleep-
ing, storage room for one’s belongings, a canister for sufficient water supply and a small
cooker have been integrated. Despite all this, due to its construction the cart should not
be too heavy and thus easy to manoeuver in daily life. Valuable contributions have thus
been generated for our fellow human beings who, due to their financial or personal dis-
tress, cannot find a suitable place for living or sleeping. The designs show that a home can
be created in an extremely small living space, a home able to meet all the necessary
needs. In times of climate change and environmental pollution, we should all attach more
importance again to the aspect of sustainability in order to protect the environment and
to sensibly use the surplus of the already existing resources.
