hou, eleven sculptural rocks subdivide the space, creating
an artistic shopping environment. All Design Studio crea-
ted the immersive shopping experience.
A round 15 years ago, what was at the time the world’s tallest building
was completed in Guangzhou, China: the hyperbolic television- and
observation tower Canton Tower, which was designed by the Amsterdam-
based architectural firm IBA in collaboration with Ove Arup and took five
years to build, only held this top spot for about a year. Nevertheless, the
tower remains more popular than ever as an iconic landmark of the city:
almost uncountable restaurants, cafés, tea houses, cinemas, open-air gar-
dens, viewing platforms, conference- and exhibition areas and spectacu-
lar leisure attractions spread over 112 floors attract around 12,000 visitors
every day. There have been some new developments at the foot of the
tower: since the end of last year, the impressive Coscia Guangzhou Tower
Boutique has been attracting visitors to its 1,000 square metres of retail
space. The presence of the tower, which is often shrouded in fog, and the
location of the boutique in the basement inspired the unusual design
concept by All Design Studio from Shanghai: black, sculpturally designed
brand spaces appear as if they are deeply rooted beneath the Guangzhou
Tower and pierce through a ceiling construction which has been clad in
white, semi-transparent aluminium mesh elements. Artful lighting design
creates a fog-like effect that gives the space an ethereal atmosphere. This
is reinforced by the ceiling height, which gradually rises from the entrance.
A glossy white floor covering and white walls reflect the airy quality of
the ceiling and enhance the surreal, dreamlike atmosphere of the space.
Exclusive accessories such as jewellery, shoes and handbags are presen-
ted in the centre of the boutique, while the adjacent VIP lounge serves as
an exclusive venue for high-profile product launches and private events.
Mirrored stainless-steel installations dissolve spatial boundaries and
create a change of perspective when looking in the mirror. An exploratory
tour through the “valley” reveals the surrounding brand spaces, which,
in combination with crystalline formations of green marble, fill the space
with vitality and depth, giving customers the feeling of “floating among
the clouds – immersed in a celebration of fashion, art and architecture”.
