D as sieht scharf aus. Messerscharf! Wer hätte gedacht, dass ein Messergeschäft in
Tokio das Potenzial hat, sich zu einem Hotspot für Touristen zu entwickeln? Bereits
das Schlendern durch die Kappabashi Street, in der die Tojiro Knife Gallery im vergange-
nen Jahr eröffnete, ist ein echtes Erlebnis. Hunderte Läden mit Gastronomie- und Küchen-
bedarf finden sich in der einen Kilometer langen Einkaufsstraße. Da braucht es eine
überzeugende Innenarchitektur hinter dem Schaufenster, um sich von der Konkurrenz
abzuheben: Vor monochromem Hintergrund stechen einem die etwa 100 hochwertigen
Küchenmesser (im übertragenen Sinne) direkt ins Auge – aufgrund der präzisen Reihung
an magnetischen Messerhaltern ist jedes davon gut erkennbar. Dezent und doch auffällig
sind die Wände und Verkaufstische vollständig mit hellgrau gefärbten Holzwolle-Leicht-
bauplatten verkleidet. Vorstehende Stahlgitter im selben Farbton bilden eine zweite
Ebene. Ihre quadratische Struktur kontrastiert die ungeordnete langfaserige Oberfläche
der dahinter liegenden Platten und ermöglicht die flexible Anbringung weiterer Präsenta-
tionselemente. Selbst an der Decke setzt sich der geschweißte Stahl fort und gibt den
Blick auf lackierte Rohrleitungen frei. Hier wurde leider die Chance verpasst, auch die
Leuchten an dem simplen System zu montieren. Eine besondere Attraktion ist der kleine,
verglaste Werkstattraum, in dem Schleif- und Reparaturdienste angeboten werden.

W ho would have thought that a knife shop in Tokyo could develop into a tourist
hotspot? Strolling through Kappabashi Street, where the Tojiro Knife Gallery
opened last year, is a real experience in itself. Hundreds of stores offering gastronomy
and kitchen supplies line the one-kilometre-long shopping street. It takes convincing
and literally sharp interior design behind the shop window to stand out from the large
number of competitors: against a monochrome background, the roughly 100 high-qua-
lity kitchen knives (figuratively speaking) hit you in the eye immediately – thanks to
their precise arrangement on magnetic knife holders, each one is clearly visible. Subtle
yet striking, the walls and sales tables are fully clad with light grey-coloured lightweight
panels made of wood wool. Protruding steel grids in the same shade provide a second
layer. Their square structure contrasts with the unordered long-fibre surface texture
of the panels behind them and allows for the flexible attachment of additional pre-
sentation elements. The welded steel even continues along the ceiling, revealing the
painted piping. Unfortunately, the designers at Katata Yoshihito missed the opportunity
to mount the lights on this simple system. A special attraction is the small, glassed-in
workshop where sharpening and repair services are offered.
