CONCEPT STORE
IN HANOVER
„Durch organische, runde Elemente wird Just loosen up – that was the programme for the partial
renovation of a traditional furniture store located in the
der kantige Grundriss aufgelockert.“ city of Hanover. Instead of forcing the displayed goods
Friederike Müller into a strict system, Friederike Müller planned a fluid
pathway that invites people to explore and discover.
With sunny-yellow accents and clever ideas for zoning,
the newcomer brought new life into the old hall.
F urniture stores: economized-to-death design, screeching advertising,
tired sales assistants, cheap coffee – that’s what you think and are
likely to expect. The fact that the Staude family in Hanover has suc-
ceeded in successfully countering the usual clichés and chains with a
dignified store offering curated goods and personal service is the joint
achievement of generations. The traditional Staude house has existed
since 1928 – and has grown steadily since then. In 2005, Smart Price was
added, an outlet shop for designer furniture between the main store and
the kitchen centre at the Hanover-Hainholz location. The popular store
with over 500 square metres of sales space is considered the flagship
and centre of attraction of the Staude empire. Recently, the hall, which
was built in the 1970s, was to receive a contemporary update. A concept
store, not a strictly organized furniture warehouse, but a fluid space con-
tinuum with areas designed specifically for social events, wine tastings,
cooking evenings and lectures – that was the vision. New Work, so to
speak, only as a shop. The clients commissioned Friederike Müller, who
recently started working under the name NOMAH Interior Solutions tog-
ether with her mother Ulrike, with the new concept. The young interior
designer took over the open layout of the existing building, had columns
and ceiling beams renovated, corrugated sheets in the ceiling area pain-
ted dark, and a fresh floor covering poured. Her new room concept
works with zoning and colour-coded “focal points” that serve as stages
for changing arrangements and products. There is also a colour-graded
round arch portal with shelves that creates a dramaturgical connection
between two sections of the room and holds table lamps, towels and
product catalogues. A holographic meeting box with foil-covered glass
panes shimmers in all the spectral colours as a true eye-catcher in the
centre. The social hub is an open bar that cleverly mediates between
the entrance area and the sales rooms located at the back. Hipster bikes
are sold in a “sporty” corner equipped with a basketball hoop and rally
stripes. An agile, independent shop concept that shows how the buil-
