A ls Gio Ponti (siehe auch S. 65) im Jahr 1954 den Compasso d’Oro ins Leben rief,
konnte der Mailänder Architekt noch nicht ahnen, dass dies einmal eine der aner-
kanntesten europäischen Auszeichnungen für Industriedesign werden würde. Seit 1958
organisiert die Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI) die Vergabe des „Goldenen
Zirkels“, sie sammelt und bewahrt auch alle bisher mit dem Preis ausgezeichneten Desi-
gnobjekte. Diese umfassende Kollektion bildet nun die Dauerausstellung des neuen ADI
Design Museums, das seit Kurzem in einem ehemaligen Kraftwerk unweit des Mailänder
Hauptbahnhofs untergebracht ist. Mit der Revitalisierung des alten Industriekomplexes
aus dem Jahr 1896 waren die Architekten Giancarlo Perotta aus Mailand und Massimo
Bodini aus Rom betraut, die bereits für die städtebauliche Neuausrichtung des umliegen-
den Areals im Stadtteil Porta Volta verantwortlich zeichneten. Sie konnten die typologi-
schen Merkmale und den industriellen Charakter der vier Bestandsgebäude weitestge-
hend bewahren und die zwischenzeitlich zerstörten Glasfassaden so rekonstruieren, dass
in den Innenräumen lichtdurchflutete, offene Ausstellungsflächen entstanden sind. Hier
findet nun die genannte permanente Schau – in chronologisch geordneten Nischen und
durch originale Skizzen und Modelle ergänzt – neben regelmäßig wechselnden temporä-
ren Ausstellungen statt. Ein weiterer Grund für eine Reise nach Mailand, liebe Designfans!

I n 1954, when Gio Ponti (look at p. 65) initiated the Compasso d’Oro, the Milan ar-
chitect could not guess that this it would turn into one of the most renowned Euro-
pean industrial-design awards. Since 1958, the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale
(ADI) has been organizing the awarding of the “golden compass” and also collects the
awarded design objects. This comprehensive collection is now the permanent exhibi-
tion of the new ADI Design Museum which, since recently, has been located in a for-
mer power plant near the Milan central station. The architects Giancarlo Perotta from
Milan and Massimo Bodini from Rome had been commissioned to revitalize the old
industrial complex from 1896 and had already been in charge of the reorientation of
the surrounding area in the Porta Volta district as to urban development. They were
able to largely preserve the typological features and the industrial character of the
four existing buildings and to reconstruct the meanwhile destroyed glass façades so
that light-flooded, open exhibition areas have been produced. This is where the per-
manent show now takes place – in chronologically arranged niches and complemen-
ted with original sketches and models and in addition to regularly changing tempo-
rary exhibitions. One more reason for a trip to Milan, dear design fans!
