CASA NUBE
IN MADRID
„Sie wachen morgens in Ihrer Privatsphäre auf, gehen Casa Nube – cloud house – is the name Studio Animal has
given to this apartment in Madrid. The most important

ted. Adjoining rooms become real eye-catchers and defi-

and intense colours also create extreme contrasts.
M adrid’s 125-hectare Retiro Park is one of the numerous green
lungs of the Spanish metropolis. To the east of it, the Colonia
Niño Jesús residential district was built in the 1970s on the site of a
nowadays disused railway property. With Casa Nube, Studio Animal
recently transformed a small-segmented apartment typical of its time,
with the usual small rooms and corridors, into an extraordinary home.
At the request of the clients, Javier J. Iniesta and his team designed an
open floor plan that responds to the local light- and climate conditions.
The removal of partition walls now allows cross ventilation between
the street and the inner courtyard – a significant consideration in a city
where temperatures can easily reach 40 degrees in summer. The result
is an open-plan living-, dining-, reading- and kitchen area. There are no
longer any corridors: the kitchen has been designed as an elongated
passageway. It was also important to create intimate private areas. Stu-
dio Animal transformed this rather pragmatically formulated brief into
interior design with a unique character. Colour contrasts play an impor-

sleeping areas are bathed in rich colours – blue and green – which even
extend to the floors and ceilings. But the most exciting feature is the
intermediate zone: the “cloud” separates the living- and sleeping areas.
Behind ten semi-circular shells reaching from floor to ceiling are the two
bathrooms. When closed, these room-high segments look like white
cumulus clouds. When open, this room divider reveals the bathrooms,
which are completely clad in pink and orange glass mosaic tiles. Stu-
dio Animal even had the insides of the rounded doors tiled in a small
check pattern. These blend inconspicuously into the cloud band, like
jib doors. A two-step elevation also separates the private areas from the
living area. The bathrooms are transit zones, as is the kitchen. Elimina-
ting corridors makes the 94-square-metre apartment appear even larger.
Colour and contrast: these are two stylistic devices that Studio Animal
knows how to use. This has been demonstrated above all by the stores
