W ie kann eine dunkle Wohnung in ein luftiges Loft verwandelt werden? Das
veranschaulichen Ana Szwarc und Marcela Rezende von Estudio Nama in der
110 Quadratmeter großen Wohnung in Rio de Janeiros gehobenem Stadtteil Flamengo.
Um die fünf freistehenden Stützen zu integrieren, wurden sie mit Beton verkleidet, sodass
sie sich optisch den bestehenden Trägern anpassen. Auch der Zementestrichboden ist
auf deren Textur abgestimmt. Die verschalten Stützen umschließen den Kühlschrank und
Küchenschränke aus Edelstahl und bilden so einen kreisförmigen Gang innerhalb der
Wohnung. Die glatten Metalloberflächen betonen den rauen Beton und seine skulpturale
Wirkung im Raum. Solch ein Spiel der Gegensätze findet sich auch in den steinähn-
lich strukturierten Wänden und Decken wieder, die trotz ihrer rauen Anmutung haptisch
weich sind. Um den Grundriss aufzubrechen und die Wohnung aufzuhellen, wurden die
bestehenden Wohnzimmerwände durch Schiebewände aus Milchglas ersetzt. Sie entkop-
peln bei Bedarf das Arbeitszimmer vom Wohnraum und lassen dennoch genügend Tages-
licht ins Innere. Auch die monolithischen Möbel, wie der Esstisch und der Waschtisch
im Bad aus Beton, wirken dualistisch. Trotz ihrer Massivität scheinen sie zu schweben.
Entstanden sind homogene Räume, die wie eine „leere Leinwand“ viel Varianz und Mög-
lichkeiten für künftige Interventionen zulassen – für Licht statt Schatten.
H ow can a dark apartment be transformed into an airy loft? Ana Szwarc and Mar-
cela Rezende from Estudio Nama give an example of how to achieve this with a
110-square-metre flat in Rio de Janeiro’s upscale Flamengo district. To integrate the five
free-standing columns, they were covered in concrete so that they blend in visually with
the existing beams. The cement screed floor is also textured to complement them. The
covered columns enclose the refrigerator and stainless-steel kitchen cabinets, forming a
circular corridor within the flat. The smooth metal surfaces emphasise the rough concrete
and its sculptural impact in the space. This play of contrasts is also evident in the stone-li-
ke textured walls and ceilings, which have a soft feel despite their rough appearance. To
open up the layout and brighten up the apartment, the existing living room walls were
replaced with sliding walls made of frosted glass. These make it possible to separate
the study from the living space as needed while still letting ample daylight into the inte-
riors. The monolithic furniture, such as the concrete dining table and washstand in the
bathroom, also appear dualistic. Despite their massiveness, they seem to float. The result
is homogeneous spaces that serve as a “blank canvas”, allowing for much variation and
possibilities for future interventions – bringing light instead of shadow.
