FLAT IN OLD BUILDING
IN BERLIN
„Unsere Inspiration für “Yes” to high, stucco-decorated ceilings, double-leaf
interior doors and herringbone-parquet flooring, “no”
die ,Wasserstelle’ und to wallpaper, niches and angled corners – Studio Loes’
den ,Berg aus Büchern’ design concept is clear already from the entrance area.
Customized furniture clarifies the room structure and

portions of the 200-square-metre flat in the old building.

– unabhängig von ihrer A good design is self-explanatory. At best, the concept becomes clear
as soon as you walk through the front door. Gonzalo Lizama, Onur
rein funktionalen Özdemir and Lukas Specks are also convinced of this, having redesi-
gned the typically angled layout of Berlin’s old building in a straight-

harmonious and meaningful way” in the flat from the Wilhelminian era.
Bücheraufbewahrung.” On the other hand, structural elements from the existing building, such
as the parquet floor or the round arches and stucco mouldings in the
Lukas Specks upper quarter of the room, have been left visible. The latter additionally
emphasize the high ceiling. Three rooms are connected to the vestibule.
Behind the double doors on the left-hand side is the living room with
access to the balcony, which juts out in front of the south-facing façade.
Straight ahead is the kitchen with a dining area and to the right the
utility room with an adjoining guest toilet. The living room is dominated
by an imposing walnut bookshelf, the so-called “mountain of books”.
Guidebooks on the subject of mountaineering belong in the bottom
row here, as the shelves become narrower towards the top, making the
furniture actually walkable – or rather: climbable. In order to reach the
literary summit safely and in style, handle strips have even been milled
into the shelves. The mirrored sheet metal-clad cooking island with a
stainless-steel worktop gives the kitchen a more minimalist look. Howe-
ver, the presence of the built-in furniture continues in this room – here
made of light-coloured glazed oak. Adjacent is a 15-metre-long corridor
along the firewall, which was previously concealed by furniture. It leads
past the guest room and study and ends in the dressing room. Curved
shapes mark the end of the elongated floor plan here – and are the pre-
lude to the formal twist in the outgoing rooms: the bathroom, which is
half-open towards the bedroom, is raised on a platform with an element
made of Turkish marble that can be used on three sides. The hybrid
has a washbasin, shower and toilet. In the adjoining former servants’
