M it der Architektur von Daniel Libeskind kennt sich Fabian Freytag inzwischen aus.
Bereits 2017 konnte er im „Sapphire“, einem kantig-schrägen Neubau von Libes-
kind in der Berliner Chausseestraße, einen extrovertierten Interieur-Entwurf für ein Pent-
house ganz nach seiner Fa çon umsetzen. Der Auftrag im benachbarten Gebäude ließ auf
sich warten, aber genau das hat sich gelohnt. Die aktuellen Eigentümer hatten ein vage
Idee von New York-Style und Naturstein in Schwarz-Weiß und ließen Freytag freie Hand.
Bis zu sieben Meter hohe Räume, spitze Winkel, asymmetrisch geschnittene Fenster,
224 Quadratmeter Wohnfläche auf eher kleinteiligem Grundriss versprachen eine Her-
ausforderung, die er gerne annahm. Die Naturstein-Affinität der zukünftigen Bewohner
aufgreifend entwarf er eine Küche aus Turmalin-Granit, einen Esstisch, Wand-, Boden-
und Sanitärverkleidungen aus Fusion- und Gabana-Quarzit – und brachte so letztendlich
acht verschiedene Natursteinarten unter. Nicht in der angedachten Schwarz-Weiß-Optik,
sondern farblich und strukturell sensibel abgestimmt auf die übrigen Materialien wie
dunkler, in der Maserung variierender Nussbaum oder welliger, hochglänzender Stahl.
Dieser soll eine bewegte Wasserfläche imitieren, hinter der Treppe zur Fassade hin ange-
bracht fängt er jeden Lichtstrahl auf und wirft ihn leicht verzerrt, verzaubert zurück.
Entstanden ist – trotz extrovertierter Hülle – eine warme, empathische Wohnatmosphäre.
F abian Freytag is now quite familiar with Daniel Libeskind’s architecture. In 2017, he
successfully executed an extroverted interior design for a penthouse in the Sapphire,
a sharp-angled new building by Libeskind in Berlin, entirely in his own style. The com-
mission for the neighbouring penthouse took time to come through, but it was worth the
wait. The current owners had a vague idea of a New York-style aesthetic and black-and-
white natural stone, and they gave Freytag free rein. Rooms up to seven metres high,
acute angles, asymmetrical windows and 224 square metres of living space on a rather
fragmented floor plan, the project promised a challenge that Freytag eagerly accepted.
Embracing the future residents’ love of natural stone, he designed a kitchen from tourma-
line granite, a massive dining table and wall, floor, and sanitary coverings from Fusion
and Gabana quartzite—ultimately incorporating eight different types of stone. Not in the
intended black-and-white look, but coordinated in terms of colour and texture with other
materials like dark walnut with varying grains or wavy, high-gloss steel. The steel, inten-
ded to mimic a moving water surface, is placed behind the staircase towards the façade,
catching every ray of light and reflecting it back in a slightly distorted, enchanted way. The
result is an inviting living atmosphere despite the extroverted shell.
