FLIX HOUSE
IN MADRID
True to the motto “There’s room in even the smallest
space”, the planners at Gon Architects have converted
an attic flat which measures no more than 42 square
metres. A redesigned floor plan-structure, ample stora-
ge space to establish order and a fresh material- and
lighting concept now produce the illusion of a differen-
tiated, flexible and light-filled cosmos for living.
B efore its renovation, the flat located in the historic centre of Madrid
could at best be described as cramped and dark but, however, in a
prime location very close to the busy Callao Square: The attic space of a
townhouse dating back to 1900, which had already been converted into
living space, originally consisted of two rooms with shallow roof pitches.
In order to produce an open and bright landscaped interior, in a first

tional windows were added to match the now planned utilization areas.
The only structural constraints that remained were the pitched roofs,
the access to the flat via an outside balcony and a chimney right in the
centre of the flat. The latter served as the starting point for the reorga-
nization of the floor plan. The chimney, as a remaining wall segment,
separates the kitchen-living room from the entrance area, which can
also be used as an office space. Clear colours and material changeovers
provide additional orientation, guide the eye and, above all, enhance
windowless areas with reflective surfaces and bright colour schemes. In
the entrance area, an 8.20-metre-long corridor area is staged with a roy-
al-blue “sky” and the office area is marked with a moss-green worksta-
tion. A mirrored cube opposite the glazed entrance door, which conceals
a small bathroom with WC and washbasin behind a concealed door,
provides sufficient light in this part of the flat in particular. The missing
shower unit was built as an extension to the glass-block cube and can
be accessed from the separate bedroom. Depending on the time of day
and the current lighting conditions, the glass wall either illuminates the
shower cubicle from the hallway or, the other way around, lights up
the entire entrance area. An eight-metre-long kitchen unit with matte
light yellow HPL fronts and new built-in wardrobes, which produce a
sensible floor height in this place for the very first time, provide suffici-
ent storage space and thus unobstructed living areas. A few colourful
pieces of furniture complete the usable areas and round off the bold,
fresh overall look now found in this flat which makes the living space
