                                                                                        DODGED HOUSE

                                                                                        IN LISBON





                                                                                        The Dodged House not only considerably differs from
                                                                                        the surrounding development due to its not really wel-
                                                                                        coming street façade. While most of the neighbours
                                                                                        have been lovingly sprucing up their romantically de-
                                                                                        crepit little houses in the old own for solvent Airbnb
                                                                                        renters, two young architects opposed the lucrative
                                                                                        plan and created a privileged void.

                                                                                        T  he façade towards the street already shows clearly what the Dod-
                                                                                           ged House does definitely not want to be: one of the countless re-
                                                                                        novations motivated by the Airbnb boom which, although they may, in
                                                                                        many case, be well and sensibly designed, are of a marketable, Instag-
                                                                                        ram-suited triviality that appears to be an ever more important indica-
                                                                                        tor of successful architecture these days. The walled-up window ope-
                                                                                        nings of the Dodged house are to imply the opposite of what, for many
                                                                                        years, has been taking place in the southern major cities of Europe se-
                                                                                        verely affected by the financial crises – not only in Portugal. Vacant
                                                                                        houses, easy to spot because of their closed, neglected façades, are

                                                                                        the windows are opened again. Daniel Zamarbide – the client and the
                                                                                        architect at the same time – and Leopold Banchini had a different plan
                                                                                        for the little four-storey house on a base area of just 40 square metres
                                                                                        in Lisbon’s Mouraria district. Towards the street, they had the openings
                                                                                        walled up, light penetrates solely via the inner courtyard; they removed
                                                                                        the storey ceilings and added three new mezzanines which, towards
                                                                                        the top, project increasingly deeper into the open space and connected
                                                                                        them with a spiral staircase of lightweight construction. The way the
                                                                                        whole building is organized – clearly inspired by the concept of Corbu-
                                                                                        sier’s machine à habiter - is extremely simple: Living, dining and coo-
                                                                                        king takes place on the ground floor with the adjacent inner courtyard;
                                                                                        on each of the first and second upper level are a bedroom and a bath-
                                                                                        room, on the third level is a study room.  All the zones are open and
                                                                                        glazed towards the three-storey open space; on all the levels, the para-
                                                                                        pet is a continuous marble slab which, on one level,  is a desk and on
                                                                                        two others  a washstand. A hardly marketable void in a large volume
                                                                                        is the motto! The Dodged House is dedicated to Irving Gill, the architect
                                                                                        of Californian modernism. His pioneering home for Walter L. Dodge,
                                                                                        which was completed in 1916, was demolished in 1970 – just when it
                                                                                        had started to be noticed by a greater public. For Zarbide and Ban-
                                                                                        chini, the Dodged House is the attempt to avoid the state of a specific
