CHICKENVILLE: SCHÖNER WOHNEN FÜR HÜHNER – VON STUDIO SKROZ AUS ZAGREB

E in ausgeprägtes Sozialverhalten, ein hohes Bedürfnis an Kommuni-
kation und eine Intelligenzleistung, die sich sehen lassen kann – das
Huhn ist dem Menschen ähnlicher, als es auf den ersten Blick den An-
schein hat. Nicht ohne Grund teilt es seit geraumer Zeit und als eines der
häufigsten Haustiere den Lebensraum des Menschen. Wer sagt also, dass
nicht auch das Huhn ein Recht auf sein eigenes, gemütliches Zuhause hat?
Schön wäre ein kleines Dorf mit allen grundlegenden Funktionen: von
Wohnungen über Plätze und Wege bis hin zu öffentlichen Straßen und Ge-
bäuden. All das gibt es in Chickenville! In dem kleinen kroatischen Ort
Rakov Potok haben die Architekten von Studio Skroz eine umwelt-
freundliche Geflügelfarm mit einer touristischen Bildungsstätte kombiniert.
Ohne deren natürliche Lebensweise zu stören, war es Studio Skroz ein
Anliegen, einen guten Einblick in das Hühnerleben zu ermöglichen, denn
selbst im ländlichen Raum wissen nicht mehr alle Kinder, woher das mor-

steckt im Detail: Wohnhäuser mit rückwärtig gelegenen Gärten – funktional
gestaltet und aus lokalen Materialien – passen sich den Bedürfnissen der
Lege hennen an und bieten, als Reihenhaussiedlung angelegt, vier Rassen
ein ansprechendes Zuhause. Angeordnet in geschwungenen Formen laden
sie die Hennen zum Schlendern und Flanieren ein, nachdem sie ihre
Küken in die zentral gelegenen „Kitas“ gebracht haben. Die Hausnummern
sowie ein Lageplan dienen zwar eher den Besuchern als Orientie rungshilfe,
aber das Wappen und die Flaggen vermitteln aus Hühnersicht eine Art von
dörflicher Identität. Den Architekten ist hier eine vorbildliche Umsetzung
von sehr angemessenem Wohnraum für über 500 Hühner auf knapp 3.000
Quadratmetern gelungen – davon hätte man auch andernorts gerne mehr!
Bei der aktuellen Wohnraumproblematik wünscht man sich beinahe – frei
nach Peter Kreuder – „Ich wollt’, ich wär ein Huhn ...“ kg

more similarities to humans than it might appear at first glance. It is

domestic animals to share people’s habitats. So who says that a chick-
en doesn’t have the same right to a cosy home? An excellent solution
would be a small village with all the fundamental functions: from
housing to squares and paths all the way to public streets and build-
ings. All this now exists in Chickenville. In the small village of Rakov
Potok in Croatia, the architects of Skroz combined an eco-friendly
poultry farm with an educational facility for tourists. Without disturb-
ing the chickens’ natural way of life, it mattered to Skroz to provide
insight into the lives of chickens since, even in rural areas, not all the
children still know where their breakfast eggs come from. The imagery
of village structures is here precisely in the details. Coops with gardens
at the back – with a simple design and made of local materials – meet
the needs of the laying hens and, designed as terraced houses, offer
an attractive home to four breeds. Arranged in curved shapes, they
look like an invitation to take a stroll after the 30 chicks have been
taken to the centrally located “nursery”. Although the house numbers

as well as a site plan are more of a guide for the visitors, the coat of
perceived by the chickens. The architects here succeeded in an exem-
plary implementation of appealing living space for more than 500
chickens on almost 3,000 square metres. In view of the current hous-
ing problems, you almost wish you were a chicken.
