M any people do not dare making a profession of their passion – Federico Deri,
however, turned his dream of his own ice-cream into reality and gave up his
job as a chemist to establish the Il Punto Gelato franchise company. The planning
duo Sondra Pantani and Pietro Marsili from MODO architettura + design in Livorno
achieved a look with recognition value usable for a wide variety of stores: The star-
ting point for designing a corporate interior was an existing ice-cream parlour in Li-
vorno in Italy. To visually combine the small-segmented structure, in all the rooms
tiles with a terrazzo décor were installed which, as floors and wall covering at half
height, are to remind of colourful sprinkles on top of the ice cream. With a graphic
outlining of all the rooms and objects, the light-dark contrast thus established is
continued with black edges on a mint-grey background and thus also emphasizes
the repeated motif of the arch that comes into effect especially for passages, shelf
constructions and counter details. Depending on the time the customers are stay-
ing, the arrangement of the functional areas is staggered from the rooms open to
the street, with a sales counters and presentations of ice-cream cakes, continuing
via the adjacent guestroom to the back and the ice-cream production hidden from
